Rogue
Base Class: Rogue

Shadow Stalkers are at home in the darkest places: deep under the earth, in gloomy alleyways, in primeval forests, and wherever else the light dims. Most folk enter such places with trepidation, but a Shadow Stalker ventures boldly into the darkness.

Affinity for Darkness

Starting at 3rd level, you have developed an affinity with darkness. This grants you access to a mysterious energy you can represent as affinity points. The number of affinity points you have is equal to your rogue level.

You can spend these points to fuel various features. You the features are: Shadow Sight, Shadow Strike, and Shadow Step.  The cost to trigger the effect is 1 point for these features unless otherwise stated.  The action for spending points is either part of the action for which the points augment, or no action unless otherwise specified.

When you spend a point, it is unavailable until you finish a short or long rest, at the end of which you draw all your expended darkness affinity back into yourself. You must spend at least half of a short rest's time in at least low light to regain your spent points.

Features:

  • Shadow Sight: You can see normally in both low light and darkness, both magical and non-magical, to a distance of 120 feet.  Cost: 1 point grants 1 minute, 2 points 10 minutes, 3 points 1 hour, 4 points 8 hours, and 5 points 24 hours.
  • Shadow Strike: Before an attack you may spend 1 affinity point to grant your sneak attack feature the ability to proc even if you do not have advantage on the attack.
  • Shadow Step: As a bonus action you can teleport up to (20 x points spent) feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is in dim light or darkness.

The Dark Arts

Starting at 3rd level, you can use your darkness affinity to duplicate the effects of certain spells. As an action, you can spend 2 affinity points to cast darkness, darkvision, pass without trace, or silence, without providing material components. Additionally, you gain the minor illusion cantrip if you don’t already know it.

Skulking Shadow

At 9th level, you are an expert at slinking through shadows. You gain the following benefits:

  • You can try to hide when you are lightly obscured from the creature from which you are hiding.
  • If you are in low light or darkness, you can spend 3 affinity points to hide in plain sight for 1 minute.  You do not need cover or obscurity to use stealth or take a hide action, you can simply melt into the darkness based on the results of your hide action.
  • When you are hidden from a creature and miss with an attack, making the attack does not reveal your position.
  • Dim light does not impose disadvantage on your Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on sight.

Aspect of Darkness

Starting at 13th level, you gain access to form made of wispy shadows.

Form of the Shadow Wraith.

Cost:

6 points to use as a reaction

4 points to use as a bonus action

2 points to use as an action

1 point to transform over the course of a minute

Description:

You transform, along with everything you are wearing and carrying, into a shadowy mist that is wraithlike in appearance for the duration. You revert to your normal form if your hit points drop to 0.

While in this form, your only methods of movement are a flying speed of 20 feet and Shadow Step.  Shadow Step still costs 1 darkness affinity point. You can enter and occupy the space of another creature. You have resistance to damage that does not originate from a spell or spell-like ability, and advantage on Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution saving throws. You can pass through small holes, narrow openings, and even mere cracks; however, you treats liquids as though a solid surface. You can't fall and remain hovering in the air even when  stunned or otherwise incapacitated.

While in this form, you can't manipulate objects, and any objects being carried or held cannot be dropped, used, or otherwise interacted with. You cannot attack, cast spells, or use abilities except for those granted the Dark Arts, Affinity for Darkness feature, and Skulking Shadow class features.  When you speak in this form you sound as if your voice has reverb and echoes.  This form lasts for 1 hour per casting, or until you cancel effect.

Legion of One

Starting at 17th level, you can manifest shadow clones. You can use a bonus action to create two shadowy echoes of yourself.  When you use this ability again your previous manifestations cease to exist.  On your turn, you can mentally command the echo to move up to 30 feet in any direction (no action required). If your echo is ever more than 30 feet from you at the end of your turn, it is destroyed.

As a bonus action, you can teleport, magically swapping places with your echo at a cost of 15 feet of your movement, regardless of the distance between the two of you.

When you take the Attack action on your turn, any attack you make with that action can originate from your space or the echo’s space. You make this choice for each attack.

When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your echo moves at least 5 feet away from it, you can use your reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature as if you were in the echo’s space.
