Base Class: Wizard
Spell Specialists are obsessive in their pursuit of the intricacies of one particular magic spell. This entitles them to unique benefits regarding their spell of choice, which propel their casting of it above and beyond the normal capabilities of other users of the same spell. They can cast this spell more effectively than normal, make it more difficult to escape, change its projected shape, and cast it more frequently than normal. At their greatest, the Spell Specialist can completely rework their specialized spell into a different, improved iteration of the spell with many exceptional qualities.
Expert Casting
Spell Specialists typically begin their magical careers by becoming enamored of one particular spell, and studying that spell beyond the limits of normal magical training. Having mastered that spell's formulae, you know full well how to "tweak" it by altering small parameters of its casting.
At 2nd Level, you select a 1st Level spell that you know and can cast when you select this subclass. This spell becomes your Specialized Spell. Whenever you cast your Specialized Spell, you may choose to confer any one of the following benefits to the spell:
- you add +1 to hit with spell attacks the spell uses, and attacks with the spell ignore partial cover.
- you add +1 to the damage of each die the spell inflicts, to a maximum of +5 to the spell's total damage.
- you add +1 to your save DC for the spell.
- you may add an extra two 5 ft squares to the area of the spell. These squares must be congruent to the spell's area and to each other, but may be added to any part of the spell's shape and area.
Additionally, you may cast your Specialized Spell once without expending a spell slot. You regain this ability after you complete a long rest.
Improved Specialization
Whereas previously you had memorized the basic formulae and learned all of the subtle nuance of your Specialized Spell, you now learn not only to expand your understanding of its conduits of power, but to safely alter those conduits and their arcane energies into something entirely more potent.
When you gain this feature at 6th level, you may choose to replace your Specialized Spell with a spell you know and can cast from the same school as your original Specialized Spell, up to a 3rd Level spell. For example, you may replace the evocation school spell Burning Hands with the evocation school spell Fireball.
Additionally, whenever you cast your Specialized Spell, you may choose to add any one of the following benefits in addition to the benefit of Expert Casting:
- you may choose to exclude a number of squares equal to your Intelligence modifier from the area of your spell.
- all targets of the spell which were required to make a save and failed are your choice of knocked prone or moved 15 ft in any direction. When you cast the spell, you choose which effect applies to all targets and all targets moved this way must all be moved in the same direction.
- all dice of damage the spell inflicts deal +1 damage.
- all targets of the spell suffer disadvantage on their first attack roll against you in any round until the beginning of your next turn.
Casting Mastery
You have learned to minimize the gestures and vocal intonations that your Specialized Spell demands, and with concentrated effort, you can cast that spell much faster than usual. As an additional benefit of these minimized actions, you can cast your Specialized Spell handily, even in tight situations.
At 10th level, you may cast the extra casting of your Specialized Spell granted by the Expert Casting feature as a bonus action. You must complete a long rest to use this feature again. Additionally, you may cast your Specialized Spell without provoking attacks of opportunity.
Greater Spell Specialization
You have now mastered the arcane mechanics of your Specialized Spell, which renders you able to alter the spell in fundamental ways.
At 14th level when you gain this feature, you may choose to replace your Specialized Spell with a spell that you know and can cast from the same school that is up to Spell Level 5. For instance, you may replace Fireball with Cone of Cold.
In addition, you may cast your Specialized Spell with one of the following options when you cast it:
- When you gain this feature, choose an energy type from the Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Radiant, Thunder or Necrotic damage types. When you cast your Specialized Spell you may choose to replace the damage type inflicted by your spell with the chosen type instead.
- add an additional +1 to your spell save DC for this spell.
- add 4 additional spaces to the area of the spell, all of which must be congruent to the area of the spell's effect, but do not have to be congruent to each other.
- you may cast your Expert Casting usage of your Specialized Spell simultaneously with this spell.
