Bard
Base Class: Bard

It's always impressive when the acoustic version of a song sounds just as good as the original.

- Me, just yesterday

A powerful chord, a soft riff, an impressive solo, a soothing melody, those that study the College of Sound can do it all. Using loud, amplified sounds to blow their audience and foes away, or using softer tones to creep their way into the audience's head. Trained in minor tinkering, these bards are able to create their own magically enhanced amplifiers for whatever instrument they use, allowing them to quickly adjust any settings on the fly.

Bards of the College of Sound are fearsome foes and even more fearsome performers.

Bonus Proficiency

Starting when you choose this college at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with Tinker's Tools.

Amplifier

Starting at 3rd level, your knowledge of the functioning of sound has allowed you to create a small contraption with your Tinker's Tools that can amplify your innate musical and magical ability.

The Amplifier is a tiny metal object. You can only have one Amplifier built at a time. While it is on your person, you can turn it on and adjust it to either Dulcet or Thunderous. You gain benefits depending on what settings are currently active on your Amplifier. The Amplifier remains active for up to 1 minute or until you end its effects early, no action required.

While your Amplifier is turned on, you can use a bonus action to switch your Amplifier's settings from Dulcet to Thunderous or vice versa.

If you lose your Amplifier or it is destroyed, you can spend 1 hour with your Tinker's Tools to create a new one.

Dulcet. You switch your Amplifier to accentuate the softer tones.

When you cast a spell that deals psychic damage, you can deal additional psychic damage equal to a roll of your Bardic Inspiration dice.

Additionally, when you cast a spell that causes the charmed condition, you can expend a use of your Bardic Inspiration feature. Roll your Bardic Inspiration dice and you can cause a number of creatures, up to the number rolled on the Bardic Inspiration dice, to have disadvantage on the saving throw against the spell.

Thunderous. You switch your Amplifier to exagerate and increase the raw volume of your music.

While your Amplifier is switched to Thunderous, whenever you deal thunder damage, you deal additional thunder damage equal to a roll of your Bardic Inspiration dice.

Additionally, when you cast a spell that knocks a creature in a direction or knocks them prone, you can expend a use of your Bardic Inspiration feature. Roll your Bardic Inspiration dice and you can cause a number of creatures, up to the number rolled on the Bardic Inspiration dice, to have disadvantage on the saving throw against the spell.

Breakdown and Restring

Starting at 6th level, your tinkering with your Amplifier has yielded in unexpected results, but none that you don't know how to fix.

You gain the following actions:

Breakdown

As you let the note loose, you amplifier enhances it dramatically, so much so that the mechanisms within cannot handle it.

When you deal psychic or thunder damage, you can, instead of rolling the damage, deal maximum damage. For example, 3d8 thunder damage would instead deal 24 thunder damage.

When you do so, your Amplifier breaks, ending any active effects from it, and it cannot be used again until you fix it or you replace it.

Restring

You made your Amplifier, so you know its ins and outs well, so a quick repair is simple to you.

As an action, you can attempt to repair your broken Amplifier. You expend a use of your Bardic Inspiration feature and make a Tinker's Tools check. The DC of the check equals your spell save DC. On a successful check, your Amplifier is repaired.

You can use this ability once, whether you succeed or fail, and regain the ability to do so at the end of a short rest.

Sound Mixing

Starting at 14th level, your Amplifier has become an extension of your being, amplifying your abilities even while switched off, and becoming even more powerful while switched on.

Whenever you deal psychic or thunder damage, you can add your Charisma modifier to the damage roll.

Additionally, you gain additional benefits depending on what setting your Amplifier is on;

  • While your Amplifier is set to Dulcet, when you deal thunder damage, you can instead choose to convert all the thunder damage to psychic damage.
  • While your Amplifier is set to Thunderous, when you deal psychic damage, you can instead choose to convert all the psychic damage to thunder damage.
