Base Class: Artificer
Through much experimentation with different applications of runic magic, as a great inventor, you have learned how to 'Engrave' the runes onto different surfaces - whether that be skin or items. You do this through the use of your custom-made Engraver's Tools, which includes a sharp needle and various arcane pigments. You worked with Moon Elves to develop this new use of their magic and collected their powerful blood as a base for the pigments. You wear your prototype Engravings proudly, showing others the work you are able to accomplish.
Tool Proficiency
When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with engraver's tools. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice.
Runic Patterns
When you choose this specialism at 3rd level, you can choose up to 2 Runic Patterns from the list below. You learn those patterns, and can reproduce them on command with your Engraver's tools. Each pattern has its own time to engrave and ink usage, as well as a location on the body it must be engraved on in order to work as a magical tattoo. You gain another pattern from the list at 5th, 9th, 13th and 17th levels
Rune of Binding
Engraving time: 1 Minute
Location: Throat
Ink usage: 1 bottle
Effect: When this rune is engraved, it deals 1d6 fire damage to its bearer. You always know where the bearer of this rune is, and they must obey any direct order you give them, or take 2d6 fire damage. They must be able to hear and understand the order for this part of the effect to work.
Rune of Dexterity
Engraving time: 30 Minutes
Location: Shoulder
Ink Usage: 1 Bottle
Effect: Increase your Dexterity score by 1, up to a maximum of 18
Rune of Dragon Breath
Engraving Time: 30 Minutes
Location: Head
Ink usage: 2 bottles
Effect: Choose a type of dragon from the Dragonborn table. You gain the associated breath weapon.
Rune of Elven Acceptance
Engraving time: 10 minutes
Location: Anywhere, usually hand
Ink Usage: Half a bottle
Effect: The wearer is treated as an honorary Elf (of whatever type bestowed the rune)
This rune may be engraved by a non-elf if instructed to by an elf, but cannot be given without an elf's permission.
Rune of Mental Link
Engraving time: 20 minutes
Location: Head
Ink usage: 1 bottle
Effect: You establish a mental link with the bearer, and can communicate with them telepathically if:
- They are not actively resisting communication
- They are not speaking
- They are not blocking magic
Rune of Power
Engraving time: 5 hours
Location: Back
Ink usage: 3 1/2 bottles
Effect: Once per long rest, you can use an action to activate this rune. When this rune is activated, for 1 minute, all your spells have advantage.
Rune of Protection
Engraving time: 1 hour
Location: Arm
Ink Usage: 1 1/2 bottles
Effect: +1 to AC and Dexterity saving throws
Rune of Sight
Engraving time: 10 minutes
Location: Face
Ink usage: 1/2 a bottle
Effect: Once per long rest, you can spend a bonus action to activate this rune. When this rune is activated, it gives the bearer Darkvision up to 60ft. If the bearer already has Darkvision, it gives them Truesight up to 60ft.
Rune of Strength
Engraving time: 30 minutes
Location: Shoulder
Ink usage: 1 bottle
Effect: Your Strength Score increases by +1, up to a maximum of 18
Rune of Ultimate Defense
Engraving time: 2 hours
Location: Back
Ink usage: 4 bottles
Effect: As an action, you can activate this rune, causing all attacks to miss you for 1 minute. This effect fails once you make an attack.
Extra Attack
Starting at 5th level, you can attack twice, rather than once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Engraver's Flair
At 9th level, the items you engrave become more powerful.
- Any item you engrave a rune into becomes a +2 magical item in addition to the effects of the rune.
- You can use your Engraver's Tools as an arcane focus for your Artificer spells.
- You can use an Engraving as an arcane focus for your Artificer spells.
Artist's Craft
At 9th level, you have reached a point in your studies of runic magic where you understand the inner functions of exactly how it works. You are able to design new Runic spells and Engravings. In addition, if you have an image or description of an Engraving, you can recreate it the same way you would create one of your learned Engravings.
Engraver's Mark
At 15th level, the materials you work with have started to make their way into your bloodstream. Being a new craft, runic engravings have never been fully researched, and the hazards of the job are completely unknown until you discover them.
- Your form changes to the point that all except an elf will recognise you as a Moon Elf
- You gain scars in the shape of a rune
- Each level you gain in this class gives you one extra scar
- A scar makes one of your learned engravings permanent and offers you another learned engraving.
- The scars glow brightly every time you cast a spell
- Your melee attacks become magical.
