Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Paladins who swear the Oath of Immolation believe that life is sacrifice. Nothing is gained freely, every action has it's cost. But the sacrifice is not without meaning or purpose. Sacrificing of the self strengthens what remains and goals achieved through hardship and sacrifice are of much more value. The world and the planes beyond are harsh and cruel, and only those who can endure and overcome the trials of life and death can achieve true strength.

Fire is the ultimate symbol of sacrifice. Adherents of the Oath of Immolation most often adopt a trial by fire mentality, and many take it quite literally. A forest burns to ashes only to grow back stronger and lusher than before. A city burns only to be rebuilt more sturdy and robust. The same can be true of people. One must not back away from trials but face them head on. Others should be encouraged to do the same.

Many paladins of Immolation follow gods related to fire, but gods of combat and warfare are also common. Some even serve more unorthodox masters such as efreeti or even certain types of dragons. Some might not serve any kind of deity or master at all but rather gain their power through a fervent belief in an ideology and a set of values. Such paladins are usually a part of an order of knights or a cult of some kind.

Tenets of Immolation

Sacrifice. Only through sacrificing something of the present can the path towards future truly begin. Through sacrifice, a deeper understanding of what remains is achieved. People must be taught the true meaning of sacrifice.

Trial. Overcoming the trials of life is like walking through fire, but it is the lessons learned along the way that shape us. You must face all such challenges with determination and guide people through their own trials.

Passion. Without passion, there is only apathy. Embrace your passions and let their flames fuel your path through the obstacles you face. Kindle the passions of those around you.

Purification. Fire purifies and renews as much as it destroys. Cleanse apathy and corruption where you see it with purifying fire.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.

Trial By Fire.

You can use your Channel Divinity to gain power through sacrifice. As an action you can imbue one weapon that you are holding with divine fire. For 1 minute, you deal 1d6 extra fire damage with that weapon and the weapon sheds light similar to that of a torch. If the weapon is not already magical, it becomes magical for the Duration. You also take fire damage equal to your charisma modifier(minimum of 1) when you activate this ability.

The extra fire damage for increases to 2d6 at level 10, and 3d6 at level 18.

Purifying Flare.

As a bonus action, you shout a divine word and purifying flames leap from you to each creature of your choice that can hear you within 30 feet of you. Each target can either end one condition affecting them or gain temporary hit points equal to your Paladin Level + you Charisma modifier(minimum of 1) as the divine fire cleanses their body from corruption. The condition can be blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, paralyzed or poisoned.

Aura of Abnegation

Starting at 7th level, you wield your passion to shield allies and weaken foes. You and allies within 10 feet of you gain resistance to fire damage. Hostile creatures within the aura lose resistance to fire damage. If they are immune to fire damage, they are resistant to it instead.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Triumph Through Pain

Beginning at 15th level, your experience in overcoming pain and hardship has made you able to withstand injuries better. As long as you have no more than half of your maximum hit points, you can use your Bonus Action to regain hit points equal to 2d8 + your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1). You can use this ability a number of times per long rest equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1).

Avatar of Flame

At 20th level, you can assume the form of an angelic avatar of pure fire. Using your action, you undergo a transformation. For 1 hour, you gain the following benefits:

  • Your body and equipment become pure fire. You have resistance to non-magical bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage and immunity to fire damage. The damage you deal with your weapons is now fire damage. If a creature ends it’s turn within 5 feet of you it takes 10 fire damage. In addition, whenever a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with a melee attack it takes 2d12 fire damage.
  • Fiery wings sprout from your back and grant you a flying speed of 60 feet.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
