Sorcerer
Base Class: Sorcerer

Some people believe that winter is just a season that is heavy on snow and cold weather, but those lowlanders are wrong.  In the high reaches of mountain ranges, where snow remains year round is where Winter’s children are truly born.  In your blood runs the strength of primordial Winter, and by encouraging this side of your heritage you gain the powers of Winter itself.

Aspect of Winter

Your Winter heritage expresses itself by awakening an Aspect of Winter within you.  At 1st level you have begun to learn to control water and ice, even to the point of pulling it from the very air.  This gives you the following abilities:

  • You ignore difficult terrain due to snow and ice.
  • You gain the ability to pull water and ice from the very air, any water and ice material components are ignored for your spellcasting.
  • You learn how to create your Mantle of Winter’s Child (see below for more information).

Mantle of Winter’s Child

At first level, you can spend 10 minutes (as part of a short rest) to create your Mantle of Winter’s Child, a white cloak of snow and ice.  This Mantle never melts and remains until you dismiss it.  While your Mantle is active it gives the following abilities:

  • It acts as your spellcasting focus.
  • Your body is covered by a layer of frost that changes your base armor class to 13 + your Dex modifier.  You cannot wear armor with this ability active.
  • Your Mantle acts as a constant Armor of Agathys (as the warlock spell) with the following properties:
  •      The level is equal to the highest spell level you can cast.  This determines the maximum temporary hit points the Mantle can hold.
  •      The duration lasts as long as your Mantle is active.
  •      The cold damage dealt to enemies equals the number of temp hit points remaining in the Mantle prior to the triggering attack.
  •      Each time you deal cold damage, your Mantle regains temporary hit points equal to 1/2 the cold damage dealt.  Cold damage dealt by the Mantle does not cause the Mantle to regain hit points.
  •      As an action, you can spend 3 sorcery points to recharge your Mantle with Winter’s chill.  This fills the Mantle up to full temporary hit points.

Skin of Winter

Between your Winter heritage and your constantly worn Mantle, the cold of Winter has soaked into your skin.  At 6th level, your skin becomes chilled to the touch and you gain the following abilities:

  • You gain resistance to cold damage.
  • Your skin begins to harden into ice, add your charisma modifer to your armor class.
  • Cold emanates from your skin.  When you are attacked by an enemy within 5’ of you, they take 5 cold damage.  This damage does feed your Mantle’s temporary hit points.
  • Your cantrips that deal cold damage deal an addition amount of cold damage equal to your charisma modifier.

Winter’s Breath

Winter’s chill has infused your body.  Starting at 6th level, the cold is in your very lungs.  Your breath mists every time you breath out, and every once in a while enough of Winter’s chill builds up in your lungs to let you breathe out Winter’s Breath.

Winter’s Breath - breath out a 15’ cone dealing 6d6 cold damage.  This ability requires the expenditure of 1 sorcery point (on each casting) and has a recharge on a 6.  ((Instantaneous duration, cast time = 1 bonus action)).  This ability feeds the Mantle for each enemy hit.

Aegis of Winter

Starting at 6th level, as an action you can spend 3 sorcery points to summon an Aegis of Winter.  The Aegis bursts from you Mantle and forms into a swirling  localized blizzard with the following abilities:

  • The Aegis blizzard has a radius equal to 5’ x 1/2 your sorcerer level.
  • The Aegis is centered on you and moves with you.
  • The Aegis provides cover for anyone looking into, within or out of it.  The only exception is the caster, who’s vision is not impaired.
  • The area within the Aegis’ radius becomes icy and slippery, acting like difficult terrain.  When you move the ground you left instantly becomes normal terrain.
  • The Aegis does not require concentration and lasts for 1 minute.

Heart of Winter

Your body is now completely infused with Winter’s cold, even your heart has been changed to a Heart of Winter. This total infusion of cold has taught you how to strengthen your spellcasting abilities.

At 14th level:

  • You gain immunity to cold.
  • Your cold damage abilities strike to the heart of your enemies.  Treat cold immunity in enemies as cold resistance.  Treat cold resistance in enemies as normal damage amounts.  Treat enemies without any cold resistance as cold vulnerable.  If your enemy does not have any cold resistance, but is bundled up against the cold, treat damage as normal.

Avatar of Winter

Starting at 18th level, you become Winter’s Avatar.  This allows you to automatically succeed on concentration saving throws for the Investiture of Ice spell whenever you cast it.  It still requires a spell slot and casting time as normal.

You can use an action to manifest Winter’s Avatar Form.  You spend 1 to 3 sorcery points and gain the following abilities for 1 minute:

  • Gain +1 AC for each sorcery point spent on this ability.
  • Your cold abilities and spells deal +1d6 cold damage per point spent on this ability

Winter’s Avatar Form can only be used once per long rest.
