Base Class: Sorcerer
Traits:
Animalistic Tendencies
Fox folk tend to reflect their fox side more than they did before their transformation. This can vary from person to person, but common traits include general twitchiness (especially when surveying an area), a reduced awareness of human social cues & niceties, impulsive lying, and "sticky fingers". They tend to have a certain amount of wanderlust, feeling restless if they remain in one place for too long.
Eyes of the Fox
Fox Folk have slit-pupiled eyes, like those of a fox. The colour is most commonly ochre (reddish-brown), but can also be yellow, brown, hazel, green, or, more uncommonly, blue.
These eyes give the Fox Folk darkvision (60ft) and advantage on perception checks that rely on sight.
Other colour morphs may have different eye colours (ex. pink eyes in albino foxes).
Forest Speech
You can communicate in a limited manner with the beasts of the forest. They can understand you and your intentions, but they cannot speak back. You can, however, glean an impression of their emotions and/or reaction to your words.
Fox's Cunning
Foxes are charming, able to weave beautiful lies with their silver tongues, but they are also sharp, able to glean meaning from the smallest of ticks and flickers.
In humanoid form, you have proficiency on deception and insight
Swift Fox
While in combat, in or out of humanoid form, you can use the Dash action as a bonus action
Fox Form
An action can be used to transform into a fox (species and colouration can be selected by player, but must be the same every time this form is taken)
while in fox form, the following rules apply:
- Your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the fox, but you retain your alignment, personality, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the fox. If the fox has the same proficiency as you and the bonus in its stat block is higher than yours, use the creature’s bonus instead of yours.
- When you transform, you assume the fox's hit points and Hit Dice. The fox's hit points is a number of d6 equal to your sorcerer level (i.e., level 1 sorcerer gets 1d6, level 10 sorcerer gets 10d6, etc.). Any damage taken in fox form carries over to your humanoid form when you revert. For example, if your fox form has 3 hit points, and you take 10 damage, you revert back to your humanoid form and take the full 10 damage.
- You retain the ability to speak and understand all of your known languages while in fox form. However, the lack of hands means that any action that would normally require the use of hands is greatly limited. The mouth can be used to complete such actions with a dexterity role.
- Spells can be cast in fox form, although anything requiring components will be greatly limited, due to the afore-mentioned lack of hands. Somatic components can be achieved with certain tail, paw, snout, and ear movements.
- You retain the benefit of any features from your race, or other source and can use them if the fox form is physically capable of doing so. However, you can’t use any of your special senses.
- Any equipment and clothing merges into the new form. DM's discresion on whether or not magical items continue to have an effect while in fox form (ex. whether or not a ring of protection increases the fox's AC as it does the humanoid character's)
Arctic Fox
The arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) is a small fox which is greyish-brown in the summer and pure white in the winter. They are most at home in cold, snowy climates, but they can adjust to live in warmer places as well with minimal difficulty (although the side effect of this is they do lose their lovely white coat for a thinner, more camouflaging brown. Or maybe that's an advantage). Unfortunately, the smaller size of the arctic fox means it has lower strength (-1) than the red fox (which is already quite weak), but it also has +1 to constitution, since it takes a hearty beast to survive arctic winters.
Alternate colour: blue morph (dark grey year-round)
While in fox form, character has:
Resistance to cold damage
Snow Camouflage (advantage on stealth checks made in snowy terrain)
-1 strength
+1 constitution
Grey Fox
The grey fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is a small fox with grey fur and patched of cinnamon-coloured patches on its ears, neck, legs, and tail. A black stripe runs down its back and creates a black cap at the tip of its tail.
Thanks to its sharp, hooked claws, the grey fox is the only fox that can climb trees; they can climb vertical surfaces with relative ease (climbing speed 40ft). This also allows them to use their claws in an attack, although bite is still preferred.
While in fox form, character has:
Climbing speed of 60ft
Claw attack: Melee Weapon Attack: +0 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (1d1) slashing damage.
Red Fox
The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is perhaps the most basic fox. It is stealthy and wiley, and, thanks to their beautiful colour and keen awareness, are terribly charismatic.
Colour morphs include standard red fox, or a white, black, grey, or variant red morph.
+3 charisma
Possible morphs include: Red (standard, sandy, blonde, light red, dark red, smoky red (black throat & belly)), White (albino, leucistic, piebald, white spotting), Grey (yellow-grey, light grey, standard grey, dark grey, smoky grey), and Black (black, dark silver, standard silver, standard cross, gold cross, silver cross).
