Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Dragon Slayers are a sect of rangers who are focused on hunting the chromatic dragons in order to protect civilization from slaughter at their hands. Rangers of this archetype are generally those who have spent their life researching the nature of dragons, spying on them in their lairs, and studying under those who have defeated a dragon in the past. Some even go so far as to steal scales or consume parts of a fallen dragon in an attempt to absorb the magical essence of these monsters. From these various experiences, Dragon Slayers work to further their arcane knowledge to overcome the armor of dragons and become masters of their extermination

Draconic Magic

Starting at 3rd level when you choose this archetype, you must choose which dragon’s magic you will wield. The spells granted by this feature are learned at the levels listed below and are added to your list of known Ranger spells. These spells do not count against the number of known spells according to the Ranger table, and are outlined under the Slayer Paths feature, with each path varying based on the chosen chromatic color. Only on path can be followed as part of this archetype, and all spells will come from the same path. Some spells come with listed restrictions on which type of damage you can choose when utilizing the spell (listed in parentheses next to the spell).

Focused Training

At 3rd level you gain one of the following features:

Guard

Shields for you act as half-cover, providing a +2 bonus to both AC and your Dexterity Saving throws. This function replaces the normal effect of wielding a shield.

Prey's Instincts

When a creature makes an attack against you using natural weapons, you may use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack

Stalker

You gain +2 to Stealth skill checks. If you are attempting to hide from one of your Favored Enemies, you have advantage on the associated Dexterity (Stealth). (If using Favored Foe instead, you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) against the target affected by the feature)

Savvy Offensive

From continued study and practice of your draconic magic, you have figured out small changes that can be made to your spells and attacks in order to try and overcome the natural defenses of certain creatures. Starting at 7th level, when you make an attack against one of your Favored Enemies  (or Favored Foe) using a spell (or weapon) which deals damage associated with your chosen slayer path, you can reroll the damage dice once and take either total. Additionally, when you make one of these attacks against a Favored Enemy (or Favored Foe) who is naturally immune to the damage type associated with your slayer path, you treat the creature as being resistant instead.

Dragon's Hide

At 11th level, patches of your skin become tough, like dragon scale, due to prolonged use of your Draconic Magic. When not wearing heavy armor, you gain +1 bonus to AC. Additionally, you can use your Action to expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher to temporarily inflate this effect. For 1 minute you gain resistance to non-magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage as well as the damage type associated with your chosen slayer path. This effect ends early if you use your action to end it or if you are incapacitated.

Dragon's Appetite

At 15th level, you gain the ability to use raw natural energy to regain power. When you would take damage from an attack, spell, or other source which deals the damage type associated with your chosen slayer path, you may use your reaction to “consume” some of the damage (up to 1/2 your HP maximum before applying resistances, immunities, or other effects). You do not take any of the consumed damage and choose one of the following benefits:

  • Regain one spell slot currently available to you
  • Gain temporary hit points equal to half of the damage consumed (rounded down)
  • Remove one temporary condition currently afflicting you. For temporary conditions with multiple levels of intensity (such as exhaustion), this reduces it to the next lowest level rather than removing the condition altogether
  • Add your spellcasting modifier to the damage of your next weapon or spell attack (in addition to normal modifiers)

If the attack or effect deals more than one type of damage, this feature only consumes the portion of damage which matches your slayer path. Other additional effects of the attack or effect apply as normal. You gain the benefit from this feature only if you are not unconscious following the damage calculation from the attack or effect.

This feature can be used a number of times equal to your wisdom modifier, and you regain all uses after finishing a long rest.
