Base Class: Rogue
There has always been a need for those on the fringes, for those erased from society to safeguard society by erasing others from it. Whether an outcast by consequence or unpersoned by choice, watching from the shadows is the phantom menace, waiting to strike.
Over the ages many loose orders of Phantom Menaces have formed. They formed their own communities with laws and regulations, covens of assassins that answered to no one but themselves. As society progressed the role of the Phantom menace became more defined: they were retreated to as a last resort, or they were those who were comfortable with operating in secrecy outside the established guidelines of chivalry and humanity. And then, some eventually became part of the martial gears of governments, whether they were stolen or molded into what they were.
While they all have their own ambitions and ideals, in practice, most Phantom Menaces tied to a government are Neutral of alignment. Seldom do they have any illusions about what they are being called to do, or how they are being used, and only care about the execution of their tasks. Independent ones, or those that are from a secretive guild, however, often have strict moral codes that lead them to be Lawful of alignment, whether Good or Evil. If there is something that a Phantom Menace almost never is, it is Chaotic, regardless of the chaos their actions cause.
While they are rarely spotted in the open, it is easy to recognize a Phantom Menace when they are focused on finishing a mission. By instruction or necessity, their killing intent and resolve becomes something mystic, which manifests as what are called Death Shrouds. When these are invoked at critical moments if often spells doom for the target of the Phantom Menace, as few are able to withstand their destiny being fulfilled or shattered.
Death Shroud
You single out a target for doom, and the threat of its fate looms ever larger over it. You can place a Death Shroud on a creature within 90 feet as a bonus action once on your turn; Death Shrouds last for one minute, or until used on another target, or until the target dies. When you attack a creature with a Death Shroud, you can invoke all or none of them, doing so before the attack is made; you can only invoke a Death Shroud if the target is surprised or incapacitated, you are hidden from it, or you have advantage on the attack roll. When Death Shrouds are invoked, the target must make a saving throw with a DC of 8+number of Death Shrouds+your Wisdom modifier: on a failure, it takes damage equal to your proficiency+Dexterity modifier+Wisdom modifier per shroud if the attack hits; if the attack would be a miss, you can expend the shrouds to instead turn it into a hit.
The maximum number of Death Shrouds you can have on a target is equal to the number of your Sneak Attack die. If a creature isn't reduced to zero hit points or fewer after invoking Death Shrouds, you can't place more with this feature until you finish a long or short rest.
Shatterpoint
There is little that escapes your sharp senses, and you are able to easily sense creatures in peril and where to strike them to bring them down. As such, you gain Tremorsense of creatures with your maximum number of Death Shrouds on them while they are in range of the feature, and additionally you can critically strike targets on a roll of 19-20.
Shadow Skulk
You've learned how to be patient and strike at just the right time, quietly positioning and shifting into place. You have advantage on a Dexterity (Stealth) check if you move no more than half your speed on the same turn.
Ghost on the Wind
You've learned to always have an eye on an exit strategy, and can move fluidly and stealthily at a moment's notice. When you reduce a creature to zero hit points or fewer when invoking Death Shrouds, you can become invisible until the start of your next turn and use your Cunning Action feature.
Shocking Revelation
Your expertise and singular intent manifest in moments of surprise and terror, the weight of your mission growing clearer. When you score a critical hit, you can place a number of Death Shrouds on the target equal to your Wisdom modifier; these shrouds don't count against your normal limit. In addition, you gain a bonus to your ability checks equal to the number of Death Shrouds on the target of the critical hit until the end of your next turn.
