Base Class: Ranger
Those who take the mantle of Beast Master have an unbreakable bond with their animal companion. Together, they protect both civilization and the wilds alike from threats wherever they may arrive.
Beast Master Magic
3rd-level Beast Master Feature
You learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Beast Master Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.
Beast Master Spells
Ranger Level | Spell |
---|---|
3rd | Animal Friendship |
5th | Locate Animals or Plants |
9th | Conjure Animals |
13th | Dominate Beast |
17th | Hold Monster |
Beast Speech
3rd-level Beast Master feature
You've learned how to communicate with beasts in a limited manner. They can understand the meaning of your words, though you have no special ability to understand them in return. You also gain proficiency in the Animal Handling skill if you don’t already have it. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make with this skill.
Ranger’s Companion
3rd-level Beast Master feature
You gain an animal companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you. Choose a beast that is no larger than Medium and has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower. (The DM may allow other creatures to be used as the animal companion.) Add your proficiency bonus to your animal companion’s AC and damage rolls. You use your spell attack modifier for your animal companion's attack rolls, and add your proficiency bonus to all ability checks and saving throws instead of what is on its stat bock. If the animal companion has an ability or attack that imposes a saving throw, the DC equals your spell save DC. The animal companion's hit point maximum equals 5 + five times your ranger level. If it has an innate fly speed, the animal companion's maximum hit points equals 4 + four times your ranger level instead. Your animal companion has a number of hit dice equal to your ranger level; it can spend these hit dice during a short rest to regain hit points.
In combat, your animal companion acts during your turn. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. You can also sacrifice one of your attacks when you take the Attack action to command your animal companion to take the Attack action instead. If you are incapacitated, your animal companion can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.
While traveling through your favored terrain with only your animal companion, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
If your animal companion has died within the last hour, you can touch your animal companion as an action to expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher to return to life after 1 minute with all its hit points.
When you finish a long rest, you can summon a new animal companion; this new companion must follow the animal companion choice restrictions. The new animal companion appears in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of you. If you already have an animal companion from this feature, you must first release it from your service before you summon a new one.
Mend Companion
7th-level Beast Master feature
You can heal your animal companion with various healing remedies. As an action you restore 1d8 + your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1) hit points to your animal companion, if it's within 30 feet of you. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Supernatural Weapons
7th-level Beast Master feature
Your animal companion's attacks now count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
Pack Mentality
11th-level Beast Master feature
When you command your animal companion to take the Attack action, the companion can make two attacks, or it can take the Multiattack action if it has that action.
Unbreakable Bond
15th-level Beast Master feature
The bond between you and your animal companion strengthens, granting you the following benefits;
- The animal companion is always under the effects of the beast bond spell, even if its Intelligence score is 4 or higher.
- When you cast a spell targeting yourself, you can also affect your animal companion with the spell if it is within 30 feet of you.
