Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

 AUTHOR’S NOTE:

As of this moment, some of the spells listed as part of the Oath Spells list are licensed content, which I do not own. As such, the spells are not added as Additional Spells to the class. Due to this, the spells do not appear within the character builder or on the character sheet while this subclass is shareable. However, these are the intended spells for the subclass. I will make sure to add them back at a later date if I am able to get a hold of the content books.

Furthermore, I will be providing more filled out descriptions at a later date as well. Thanks!

"It's as if the very weight of the world rests upon your shoulders. Your past sins twisting your dreams into nightmares, and your waking moments into distortions of reality. You eventually sink to an abyss where it would be effortless to curl up and die rather than to face your wrongdoings. I understand this all too well.

However, as I see it, fleeing from your sins is cowardice. It is exceptionally challenging to stand tall against your own wickedness. Yet, you must. If at the very least to protect those you call family from the monster you once were.

Atonement begins within oneself, so acknowledge your sins and move forward. Do you hear me? Are we clear? Good. Now get up and move."

- Thermae of Fimbulvetr to Elauriel Silverdown, the first Paladin of Atonement.

TENETS OF ATONEMENT

Though the exact words and reasons behind taking the Oath of Atonement vary between paladins, they all share these tenets.

Acknowledge Wrongdoing. I acknowledge my sins; my shortcomings. I survive with those wrongs carved into the life I've lived until now.

Learn From The Past. I must learn from my mistakes, so that I may avoid making the same transgressions again. The road ahead will be punishing, but I have already survived the trek I've walked thus far.

Push Forward. I must push onward towards a brighter tomorrow so that I am a better version of myself, if at the very least for the sake of those I love. Nothing will stand in my way as I rectify my past weaknesses.

Oath of Atonement Spells

Channel Divinity

3rd-level Oath of Atonement feature

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Atonement's Bond. As an action, you release divine energy that seeks to force those who oppose you to atone for their sins. You become bonded to a creature that you can see within 30 feet of you, using your Channel Divinity. You gain resistance to all damage dealt by the bonded creature, and whenever you take damage from that creature it takes damage equal to the amount of damage you took. The bond lasts for 1 minute or until the creature drops to 0 hit points or falls unconscious.

You can end this effect on your turn as part of any other action. If you fall unconscious, this effect ends early.

Sinner's Reparation. You can use your Channel Divinity to make amends for your past mistakes. Immediately after an attacker within 30 feet of you targets a creature other than you with an attack, you can use your reaction to force the attacker to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the attacker must choose a new target within range or lose the attack or spell, and the attacker is immediately frightened of you for 1 minute or until it takes damage. If a creature frightened by this effect ends its turn more than 30 feet away from you, it can attempt another Wisdom saving throw to end the effect on it.

If you fall unconscious, this effect ends early.

Aura of Atonement

7th- and 18th-level Oath of Atonement feature

Starting at 7th level, your determination assists you in protecting your allies while you aren't incapacitated. When a friendly creature other than yourself within 10 feet of you takes damage from an attacker, you may use your reaction to grant the friendly creature resistance to that damage.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Bond's Warding

15th-level Oath of Atonement feature

Starting at 15th level, your Atonement's Bond gains increased power against your enemies causing your allies to be shielded. A creature that is under the effects of your Atonement's Bond has disadvantage on attack rolls made against creatures other than yourself.

Atonement's Luminary

20th-level Oath of Atonement feature

At 20th level, you have gained the insight to truly atone for your past wrongs, and harness that into sheer power. As an action, you can magically become an incarnation of atonement, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • In combat, you gain a special reaction that you can take once on every creature’s turn, excluding your own, to use your Aura of Atonement feature in place of your normal reaction. This reaction cannot be used on the same turn you use your normal reaction.
  • When a friendly creature benefits from your Aura of Atonement feature, that creature can immediately use its reaction to make one weapon attack against a creature within range, adding your Charisma modifier to the attack's damage roll.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
