Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Art by Akihiko Yoshida

“He stepped back with a flourish, throwing open the bakery doors—and how the children scrambled and squealed with delight when they saw inside! There were pasties and pies, tarts and truffles, biscuits and bundts—and the most wonderful cakes I’d ever seen, covered in cream and topped with fruit.”

—Frederick von Reichenberg, The Midwinter’s Solace

Patissiers are the creators of pastries, cakes, and desserts: the artists of the culinary world, whose aptitude for bringing happiness is unparalleled. A good patissier understands the value of smiles, relishing every satisfied customer; for in an all-too-often bleak world, good cheer is its own reward. Though once little more than a novelty of the big cities, exclusively serving the higher (and richer) echelons of society, patissiers have in more recent times become increasingly common, setting up shop in smaller villages to spread joy among local communities. Some have even founded their own culinary schools, determined to pass their talents and artistic flair down to the younger generation.

Every so often, however, a patissier is not content with simply putting down their roots in any once place. Instead, they desire to see the world—to taste its splendour and enrich their own work through experience. Taken to an extreme, these driven folk become adventurers in their own right, ever in search of fame, glory, and—of course—new ingredients.

Creative Spirit

As a patissier, you have the ability to create delightful treats. Though you work primarily for the enjoyment of your allies, the unique blend of flavours you bring to each dish tends to have adverse effects on the unrefined palates of your foes. With your Bon Appétit ability, you can create a variety of foods on the fly, with the available ingredients expanding in number as you level. The full array of creations is listed below:

Name Ingredients Effect
Poison Pastry Genoise + Chantilly Poison a single target.
Blinding Biscuit Genoise + Streusel Blind a single target.
Deafening Dariole Genoise + Nappage Deafen a single target.
Tethering Tart Genoise + Fraise Restrain a single target.
Frightening Fruitcake Genoise + Zeste Frighten a single target.
Charming Cheesecake Genoise + Pomme Charm a single target.
Slumbering Soufflé Genoise + Vanille Make a single target fall unconscious.
Lethal Layer Cake Genoise + Chocolat Deal 5d10 necrotic damage to a single target.
Flaming Fondant Biscuit + Chantilly Give a single target fire vulnerability for one fire-based attack.
Ice Cream Cake Biscuit + Streusel Give a single target cold vulnerability for one cold-based attack.
Electric Éclair Biscuit + Nappage Give a single target lightning vulnerability for one lightning-based attack.
Magical Mousse Biscuit + Fraise Give a single target force vulnerability for one force-based attack.
Wilting Winecake Biscuit + Zeste Give a single target acid vulnerability for one acid-based attack.
Mind-Melting Macaron Biscuit + Pomme Give a single target psychic vulnerability for one psychic-based attack.
Bright Blondie Biscuit + Vanille Give a single target radiant vulnerability for one radiant-based attack.
Devil’s Delight Biscuit + Chocolat Give a single target necrotic vulnerability for one necrotic-based attack.

Bon Appétit

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you begin to understand how your unique talents might be applied in the heat of combat. As an action, you can speedily make and throw a creation (see table above) at a single target within a 15-foot radius with a standard attack roll to hit. Upon being hit, the target must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = Patissier’s Charisma score + proficiency) or be hit square in the mouth and unwillingly swallow the creation whole. The creation’s effect—and strong, lingering taste—will last for 30 seconds or until removed by external means. If the attack hits but the target succeeds the saving throw, the creation will deal 1d10 bludgeoning damage, but the target will grow enraged and have attack roll advantage on you for its next turn.

At this level, you are experienced only in the use of base ingredient genoise and secondary ingredients chantilly, streusel and nappage. A creation requires and consumes one of each ingredient, which must either be purchased from specialist stores in settlements or found in the wild (see below).

Artistic Flair

Also at 3rd level, you develop a natural, effortless flair to your work. You gain proficiency in the Performance skill.

Good Harvest

At 7th level, you have grown accustomed to finding ingredients—whatever form they may take—during your travels. As an action, you can search the current area for secondary ingredients, either natural or abandoned. Roll a pair of percentage die, locating the found item in the table below, then add quantity 1d4 to your inventory.

Roll Ingredient Roll Ingredient
0-20 Chantilly 50-70 Streusel
20-30 Fraise 70-75 Vanille
30-40 Zeste 75-95 Nappage
40-50 Pomme 95-100 Chocolat

Though you may not be immediately adept in using the ingredient(s) you procure, different ingredients hold different value: exotic chocolat and vanille, for example, would fetch high prices in stores; or might alternatively be traded with a willing merchant for a greater number of more accessible ingredients.

If you land a critical hit in combat, you can steal ingredients as above without the action counting towards your short rest limit.

You can perform this search two times per short rest. At 10th level, this rises to three; at 15th, four; and at 18th, five.

Baking Tray

Also at 7th level, you finally find the time to purchase yourself a new baking tray. You are now experienced in the use of base ingredient biscuit, granting you access to creations capable of briefly reducing a foe’s defences to a point of vulnerability.

Self-Indulgence

At 10th level, you gain something of a taste for your own work, to the point where you may even occasionally sneak away portions for yourself. As a bonus action, you can choose to make and eat a biscuit-based creation, imbuing yourself with the associated damage type and dealing 1d10 bonus damage of that type on your next attack that turn.

Exquisite Decoration

Also at 10th level, you develop a knack for the finer details of your creations. As an action, you can prepare a valid chosen creation and store it for use on your next turn, consuming a standard amount of ingredients. If on your next turn you use this prepared creation  on a target, that target suffers disadvantage on its Dexterity saving throw. If you do not use the prepared creation on your next turn, it is lost.

Fabulously Fruity

At 15th level, you learn how best to imbue your creations with fruity five-a-day goodness. You are now experienced in the use of secondary ingredients fraise, zeste and pomme.

Sundae Surprise

At 18th level, you become a master of the most beloved ingredients of all. You are now experienced in the use of secondary ingredients vanille and chocolat.
