Base Class: Wizard
Wu jen master a tradition of wizardry that incorporates elements of monastic traditions allowing them to command the elements, spirit forces, and the powers of nature, in addition to traditional arcane magic. They are seldom found living with the rest of human society. Instead, they live as hermits in the wilderness, purifying their bodies and minds to contact the various natural and supernatural powers of the world. From these entities they learn their spells in the form of unique theories that that are recorded in their spell books, magical means to control the invisible forces of the world.
Wu jen are akin to wizards in a land where there are no wizard colleges and mentorship is hard to find. Some reject the structures and traditions of their societies, becoming hermits or traveling mystics in distant lands. These are most likely to be found acting as makeshift shamans for the tribes of Purang in Malatra.
Many wu jen powers are similar to those of the shugenja. Where they differ is in their relationships to people. Shugenja are rooted in society, serving as spiritual leaders and advisors. Wu jen are often withdrawn and solitary, focusing on personal power and self improvement.
Wu jen are among the most likely to have members that originate from outside of Kara-Tur. The vast majority of wu jen learn their craft from a single mentor. The rejection of social stricture by many wu jen means that they are more willing to teach non-Eastern students than are members of other Eastern classes. There is even talk in a few major wizard colleges of studying the nature of the five elements system to see if there is validity to the method. Such discussions are currently occurring at Candlekeep and at wizard colleges in Waterdeep, Gheldaneth, Silverymoon, and even in Thay. The Thayans have seen the ease with which wu jen manipulate the energies of their spells and seek to learn the secret behind this facility.
Training of The Five elements
2nd-level Order of Wu Jen feature
You are given a basic understanding of the core nature of the Wu Jen teachings, as well as how to make use of basic martial arts from a intellectual point of view such as knowing the most likely places for foes may try to attack you from based on their movements and behavior, to striking pressure points to extract crucial information about your foe, granting you insight about their combat ability.
You gain proficiency in the nature and arcana skill if you don’t already have it.
You also gain the following benefits:
- While you are wearing no armor and not wielding a shield, you gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1).
- You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and simple weapons.
- You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or simple weapon.
- You can also cast the true strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn and know the spell, damage can’t break your concentration on this spell when cast in this way.
- You can add cleric, sorcerer, and druid spells to your spell book as if they were wizard spells. If a spell in your spellbook doesn’t appear on the wizard spell list, the spell is nonetheless a wizard spell for you.
Watchful Spirit
2nd-level Order of Wu Jen feature
Once per long rest, you can reroll an initiative roll you made before you know your place in the initiative order. You take the better of the two rolls.
Mystical Erudition

You can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Moreover, you can cast one of your cantrips in place of one of those attacks.
- You learn the "Transmuted Spell" metamagic option and one other Metamagic option of your choice from the sorcerer class. You can use only one Metamagic option on a spell when you cast it, unless the option says otherwise. Whenever you reach a level that grants the Ability Score Improvement feature, you can replace one of these Metamagic options with another one from the sorcerer class.
- You gain a number of sorcery points equal to 2 times your PB to spend on Metamagic (these points are added to any sorcery points you have from another source but can be used only on Metamagic). You regain all spent sorcery points when you finish a long rest.
Arcane Absorption
10th-level Order of Wu Jen feature
You can direct your magic to absorb supernatural damage. When you take damage from a spell attack, you can use your reaction to expend one spell slot and reduce that damage to you by an amount equal to five times the spell slot’s level. If the damage is reduced to 0, you can as part of the same reaction, repurpose the magical energy absorbed to cast a spell you know or have prepared at that level without expending a spell slot. The spell you cast in this way must be of the same level as the level that the spell you absorbed was casted at.

Posted May 7, 2024I absolutely love the idea behind this subclass, but I have a few incredibly minor critiques.
The second level feature Training of the Five Elements is awesome, but I don't think the martial arts feature was implemented correctly as unarmed strikes do are not listed as a d4 and do not use dexterity, which isn't a big deal, but I thought worth mentioning. Also, the cleric spells do not show up like the druid and sorcerer spells do, I, personally, don't think this is a huge deal, but, again, thought it was worth mentioning.
Of slightly greater importance than those minor issues is the fact that the capstone feature does not actually show up in either the builder or on the character sheet.
Aside from those minor critiques, I think this is an amazingly put together subclass and captures the feeling of the Wu Jen wonderfully and you should be proud of yourself for quality work.
Have a nice day.
