Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

The idea for this subclass came to me as I was working on a setting inspired by ancient Greece and Rome.  I wanted to evoke both the combat prowess and force of personality of someone like King Leonidas, who uses martial might and tactical teamwork in combat.  While the name brings to mind a heavily-armored warrior wielding a spear and shield, I deliberately avoided any requirements for using this equipment in any of the subclass features, since I wanted to leave the player the freedom to choose the weapons they would prefer to wield.  In keeping with the type of character that inspired this subclass, the Hoplite has multiple features that use Charisma to add bonuses to certain attacks, saving throws, et cetera.  I hope that this inspires the player to branch away from the strong-and-silent Fighter stereotype and roleplay both in and out of combat.

This second version of the subclass (1.1) has a few minor changes compared to the original.  I wanted to make sure that the core features had some function even without any adjacent allies, as well as give the Hoplite's allies more of an incentive to stay in formation.  The changes are as follows:

  • As One.  The bonus to attack and damage rolls and AC now applies to allies within 5 feet of you.  The ability to allow allies to use their reaction to attack a target that you hit now requires a bonus action.  The bonus damage on allies' reaction attacks using this feature now has a minimum of 1.
  • Steadfast Presence.  This feature now gives you proficiency in Charisma saving throws.
  • Defensive Bastion.  The bonus damage dealt by opportunity attacks using this feature now has a minimum of 1.
  • Unstoppable Force.  The option to make a Strength check to knock a creature prone with this feature now requires a bonus action.

Commanding Presence

When you choose this subclass at 3 level, you gain proficiency in Intimidation and Persuasion.  If you already have proficiency in either of these skills, you can add double your proficiency bonus to checks made using that skill.

As One

Starting at 3 level, you and each ally within 5 feet of you gain a +1 to attack and damage rolls and AC for each of those allies, to a maximum bonus of +2.  In addition, when you make a melee attack, you can use a bonus action to allow any allies within 5 feet of you to use their reaction to make one melee attack against the same target.  On a hit, those allies can deal additional damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1).

Steadfast Presence

At 7 level, you gain proficiency in Charisma saving throws.  While an ally is within 5 feet of you, you and those allies have advantage on Strength and Charisma checks and saving throws.

Defensive Bastion

Starting at 10 level, you can use a bonus action to enter a defensive stance until the start of your next turn.  While in this stance, you can make an opportunity attack against any creature that enters your reach or moves 5 feet or more while within your reach.  On a hit, you can deal additional damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1).

Immovable Object

Starting at 15 level, when you or any allies within 5 feet of you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw, you can use your reaction to shelter your allies.  When you do so, you and those allies instead take no damage if you succeed the saving throw, and half damage if you fail.

Unstoppable Force

Starting at 18 level, when you hit a creature with a melee attack on your turn, you can use a bonus action to make a contested Strength check with that creature.  You can add your Charisma modifier to this check.  If you succeed, that creature is knocked prone and you and any ally within 5 feet of you can move up to half of your speed (any creature that moves with you uses your speed instead of their own).
