Base Class: Fighter
Vigilant protectors are warriors who devote themselves to protecting an individual. They are alway watching out for threats and ready to spring into action to protect the ones they care about at a moments notice.
Detect Threat
To protect your target more effectively you've trained your senses to detect threats that try to hide from you, and you train your discerning eye to perceive threat in others who may try to hide their intentions. When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the perception and insight skills, if you don't already have them.
Guardianship
Starting at 3rd level, as a bonus action you can declare your protection and guardianship for one willing creature within 30ft of you. This guardianship lasts until you use this ability on another creature. You can activate this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency Modifier, you regain all uses when you finish a long rest.
If the target of your guardianship can see/hear you and is within 30ft of you when you both roll for initiative, then any initiative roll they make that is less than 1/2 your initiative roll can be treated as if they rolled 1/2 of what your initiative roll is (rounded up). If a creature hits the target of your guardianship with an attack, until the start of that creature's next turn, you gain advantage on the next attack you make against it.
Additionally you provide three-quarters cover, instead of half cover, for friendly creatures behind you.
On Guard
You always seem to be ready for a fight, when one does break out you're usually more prepared than others. When you gain this feature at 7th level you gain the following abilities:
- When you roll for initiative, you can treat a D20 roll of 9 or lower as a 10.
- On the first round of combat, provided you aren't surprised, you can use your reaction to give the first attack made against you this round disadvantage.
- If you are surprised on your turn, you can still move at half your speed and take either an action or bonus action, not both. Additionally while surprised, regardless of your abilities, you can only make one melee or ranged weapon attack on that turn.
Protect the VIP
At 10th level, you gain the following abilities while the target of your guardianship ability is in sight:
- As a bonus action you can move up to your speed towards the target of your guardianship. You must end this movement closer to the target than you started.
- The first time on each of your turns when you hit a creature within 5ft of the target of your guardianship, you can add your proficiency modifier to the damage roll.
- If you are within 5ft of the target of your guardianship, and there's no barrier between you, and they're willing, you can spend half of your movement to switch places with them. This movement does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
Protector's Sacrifice
At 15th level, when the target of your guardianship is hit with an attack from an attacker you can see, you can immediately before damage is rolled use your reaction to move up to 1/2 your speed towards the target of your guardianship. You must end this movement closer to the target than you started. Then, if you end within 5 feet of the target of your guardianship and there's no barriers between you, you can immediately switch places with the target of your guardianship and make that inciting attack hit you instead, ignoring your AC. Finally, if you take damage from the attack, the attacker has disadvantage on attacking anyone but you until the start of their next turn. Once you use this ability, you can't do so again until you complete long rest.
Unconquerable
Starting at 18th level, you muster the will to withstand any punishment, so that you may continue to protect those who matter to you. You can now use your second wind ability as a reaction if you take damage that would drop you to 0 hit points. When used this way you apply the healing benefit before you apply the damage, potentially saving your life. Additionally you can use your second wind ability again before it's recharged, but if you do you suffer one point of exhaustion.
