Rogue
Base Class: Rogue

There are rogues that prefer to be sneaky, subtle, their enemies not knowing until it is too late. Then there are rogues who prefer to make it well and clear to these in their way... they are coming and your demise won't be quiet.

Like the Arcane Trickster, some rogues choose to learn the ways of magic and make it their own. But rather than practising wizard spells and furthering mage hand, some choose to dabble in the arts of a bard, becoming what is referred to as a Vocal Magus, someone with exceptionally potent control of their voice, combining their own skulduggery into words and phrases that spell demise for the wrong people.

True Bards may be capable of excellent feats and dramatic performances, but the only ones who get to avoid the songs and speeches of a Vocal Magus are the deaf, and they're the lucky ones.

Spellcasting

When you reach 3rd level, you gain the ability to cast spells. See Spells Rules for the general rules of spellcasting and the Spells Listing for the wizard spell list.

Cantrips

You learn three cantrips: vicious mockery and two other cantrips of your choice from the bard spell list. You learn another bard cantrip of your choice at 10th level.

Spell Slots

The Vocal Magus Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your bard spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

For example, if you know the 1st-level spell charm person and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast charm person using either slot.

Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher

You know three 1st-level bard spells of your choice, two of which you must choose from the enchantment and evocation spells on the bard spell list.

The Spells Known column of the Vocal Magus Spellcasting table shows when you learn more bard spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be an enchantment or evocation spell of your choice, and must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 7th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.

The spells you learn at 8th, 14th, and 20th level can come from any school of magic.

Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the bard spells you know with another spell of your choice from the bard spell list. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots, and it must be an enchantment or evocation spell, unless you’re replacing the spell you gained at 3rd, 8th, 14th, or 20th level from any school of magic.

Spellcasting Ability

Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your bard spells, since your power comes from your heart and soul and your capability of expressing it. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your bard modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a bard spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your charisma modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your charisma modifier

Voice of the Magus

Starting at 3rd level, you gain the following benefits as part of your unusual training and talents

  • You gain proficiency in two charisma skills (Deception, Intimidation, Performance or Persuasion) of your choice, double any proficiency bonuses for ability checks that use the selected skills
  • You learn two languages of your choice
  • You gain a new way to use Sneak attack. When you cast Vicious Mockery against a creature that is within 5 feet of a creature hostile to it or has disadvantage on the spell's saving throw, you can add your sneak attack dice to the damage if it fails the saving throw.

Beguiling Words

Starting at 9th level, when you spend at least one minute speaking or singing either just before or as part of casting a bard spell, all targets have disadvantage on any saving throws to resist the spell.

In addition, when you cast a bard spell that has a verbal component, you never appear to be providing or enacting the verbal components of the spell being cast, as all that is heard by everyone nearby is your voice and words. You still need to supply all components needed for the spell being cast.

Mimicker

At 13th level, your ability to manipulate your own voice has allowed you to apply it in more subtle situations.

- You can mimic the speech of another person or the sounds made by other creatures, provided you have previously heard the speech or sounds for at least one minute.
- When you speak, you can also make your voice appear as if it originated from a point within 60 feet of you.

Vicious Tongue

At 17th level, You can use any bard spell you know that causes damage in place of Vicious Mockery, as per Voice of the Magus. If the spell would affect multiple valid targets, only one of them can take the sneak attack damage. In addition, once per round, if a creature you cast a bard spell on would pass their saving throw, you can have that creature take 2d6 psychic or thunder damage (your choice), unless they would already take damage as a result of passing the spell save.
