Bard
Base Class: Bard

Bards of the College of Darts grew up in taverns, caravans, or on the streets. Referred to as shooters, these bards utilize the forces of luck and fortune to alter their magic. Unlike other bards, shooters rarely sing, instead choosing to use their skill in sleight of hand, smooth storytelling, and flashy magic to befuddle their marks.

Despite being generally accepted, many a shooter has had to make a quick getaway after getting caught fixing a game or bet. Shooters trust Luck in all situations, which has led to just as many bards of this college becoming rich and famous as it has led to destitution and poverty.

Bonus Proficiencies

When you join the College of Darts at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in sleight of hand, and any gaming set of your choice. Furthemore, while holding this gaming set, you can use it as a spellcasting focus for your Bard Spells.

Raising the Stakes

At 3rd level you learn the spell Magic Missile, if you don’t know it already. This does not count against the number of spells you have prepared. In addition, you can cast Magic Missile at 1st level without expending a spell slot a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus (PB). You cannot do so again until you finish a long rest, but you can still cast it normally by expending a spell slot.  Furthermore, you have learned to channel your luck into this spell. When casting Magic Missile, choose one of your targets and roll a d8 on the Longshot Table to see how your spell is affected. You may also expend a Bardic Inspiration to gain an additional effect based on the result on the Longshot Table.

Effect

1

If you expended a Bardic Inspiration, you gain the following benefits:

  • If the target casts or is already affected by the Shield spell, they have resistance to this spell’s damage instead of taking no damage.
  • Add your Bardic Inspiration Die to this spell’s damage.

2

The spell’s damage type changes to Cold instead of Force. If you expended a Bardic Inspiration, the target must succeed a Dexterity Saving Throw or have their movement reduced a number of feet equal to 5 times the number rolled on your Bardic Inspiration Die.

3

The spell’s damage type changes to Lightning instead of Force. If you expended a Bardic Inspiration, choose another creature within 30ft of the original target. Both creatures must succeed a Dexterity saving throw or take your Bardic Inspiration Die of Lightning damage.

4

The spell’s damage type changes to Thunder instead of Force. If you expended a Bardic Inspiration, the target must succeed a Constitution Saving Throw or be pushed a number of feet equal to 5 times the number rolled on your Bardic Inspiration Die.

5

The spell’s damage type changes to Acid instead of Force. If you expended a Bardic Inspiration, the target or another creature must use their action to remove the acid or take your Bardic Inspiration Die of acid damage at the end of the target’s next turn.

6

The spell’s damage type changes to Poison instead of Force. If you expended a Bardic Inspiration, the target must succeed a Constitution Saving Throw. If they fail, on their next attack, the target must roll your Bardic Inspiration Die and subtract the result from the attack roll, potentially causing the attack to miss.

7

The spell’s damage type changes to Fire instead of Force. If you expended a Bardic Inspiration, the target and all creatures within 5ft of the target must succeed a Dexterity Saving throw or take your Bardic Inspiration Die of fire damage.

8

You get to choose the effect of the Longshot Table.

Creative Applications

At 6th level, you can use your magic to assist you in two unique ways:

  • You can focus your magic to assist in seemingly impossible tasks. You can add 1d4+1 to the next Strength or Dexterity Check, or Strength or Dexterity Saving Throw you make.
  • You can use your magic to propel you into the air. You jump an additional amount of feet equal 1d4+1 multiplied by 5.

You can use this feature PB times per day. You cannot do so again until you finish a long rest or expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher.

Fixing the Odds

Starting at 14th level, you have gained more control over the chance magic that has empowered you. You can now gain the additional effect on the Longshot Table without having to expend a Bardic Inspiration. If you do expend a Bardic Inspiration, roll 2d8 instead of 1d8, and choose which result you would like to apply. In addition, if you roll doubles, Luck smiles upon you. Double the number of darts in this spell’s casting, and you can apply the effect rolled to two different targets instead of one.
