Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

There is darkness in the world, dwelling in ancient forests, the deepest depths of the earth and amongst the shadowed alleyways of cities. It is the duty of a torchbearer to find this darkness and burn it away; to defy it without fear and with the guidance of their torches that burn with the radiance of the sun.

Radiant Torch

Beginning at 3rd level when you choose this archetype, you always carry the flames of hope with you, no matter where you go, in the form of a torch. As a bonus action, you can summon or dismiss your Radiant Torch. It emits a 30-foot radius of bright light and a 30-foot radius of dim light beyond that. It also counts as a one-handed melee weapon with the Light property, and deals 1d8 fire or radiant damage (your choice) on a successful hit. You can use your Wisdom modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for its attack and damage rolls.

Whenever you take the Attack action to make an attack with your Radiant Torch and hit a creature, you can choose to have it make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC instead of taking damage. On a failed save, the creature is turned by you until the beginning of your next turn.

A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can't willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can't take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.

As an action, you can plant your Radiant Torch in the ground at your feet. After doing so, spells you cast of 1st level or higher that target a willing ally while within the torch’s radius of bright light grant the target a number of temporary hit points equal to half your ranger level rounded up.

Torchbearer Magic

Also at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Torchbearer Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Torchbearer Spells

Ranger Level Spell
3rd burning hands
5th continual flame
9th fireball
13th wall of fire
17th flame strike

Inner Embers

At 7th level, you carry ever-burning embers of hope within you at all times, which ward you against the darkness. You gain the following features:

Flame’s Embrace. Whenever you take fire or radiant damage, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage you take by an amount equal to your ranger level.

Blazing Courage. Creatures within your Radiant Torch’s radius of bright light have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.

Molten Steel. While you’re within your Radiant Torch radius of bright light, you can choose to replace the damage type of any weapon you’re wielding to radiant or fire damage.

Trail Blazer

At 11th level, you are always ready to plunge headfirst into the darkness, leaving a trail of flames behind to serve as a guide for your allies and a warning to your foes. As a bonus action, you can cause your feet to become enveloped in radiant flames. After doing so, any movement you make before the end of your current turn leaves behind a 5-foot wide line of radiant flames in the exact spaces you moved through. These flames last until the beginning of your next turn. Enemies that start their turn on the line or move into it, take fire or radiant damage equal to your Wisdom modifier. Allies take no damage from the line and for them, movement along this path costs only 1 feet for every 3 feet moved.

Radiant Salvation

At 15th level, the radiant light of your torch banishes all darkness. You gain the following features:

  • The bright light emitted by your Radiant Torch counts as natural daylight.
  • Any areas of magical darkness within the radius of bright light emitted by your Radiant Torch is instantly dispelled.
  • Hostile creatures within your Radiant Torch’s radius of bright light have disadvantage on attack rolls.
