Base Class: Bard
The way of the Skald is an ancient tradition among most warrior communities and presents the deeds of mighty warriors throughout the ages as inspiration for deeds of valor. Skalds accompany warriors into battle, granting them enhanced abilities and using their skills to turn the tides in their favor.
Bonus Proficiencies
When you join the College of Skalds at 3 level, you gain proficiency with medium armor, and one simple or martial weapon of your choice. You may use any weapon you are proficient with as a spellcasting focus.
Rhythm of Battle
Also at 3 level, you can inspire you and your allies to eagerness in combat. You cannot be surprised in combat, and whenever you roll initiative, you may forfeit your first turn’s action to let yourself and all friendly combatants within 30 feet of you who can hear you add 1d4 to their initiative rolls. This increases to 1d6 at level 10.
Attuned to Battle
When you reach 6 level, you gain advantage on all concentration saves to maintain your spells, and receive no penalty for casting spells at opponents in melee range.
Martial Inspiration
Also at 6 level, whenever an ally expends a use of your bardic inspiration on an attack roll and hits, the attacker may choose one of the following additional effects:
- This turn, the damage dealt by this weapon counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance.
- The target must make a Wisdom saving throw with DC equal to your spell save DC. On a failure, the target becomes frightened of you for 1 minute.
- Until the beginning of your next turn, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls made against you, and you have advantage on saves against any spells cast by the target.
- You gain temporary hit points that last for 10 minutes equal to twice the result of the bardic inspiration die.
Battlesinger
Beginning at 14 level, whenever you use a Bonus Action to grant bardic inspiration, you may grant it to up to 3 creatures. Whenever you make an attack or cast a spell as an action, you may cast a cantrip as part of the same action.
Endurance of Ages
At 14 level you may also spend one use of your bardic inspiration as a reaction whenever a creature that can hear you within 30 feet falls to 0 or fewer hit points. They instead drop to hit points equal to the results of the bardic inspiration die. You may only use this feature once, and regain the ability to do so after a long rest.

Posted Jul 16, 2021A homebrew I whipped up for a campaign I'm trying to put together. I wanted to make a Bard subclass that was clearly martial focused, but had a bit more oomf than such existing classes, which I feel are a bit on the weak side. At the same time, I don't want to overload the subclass, so feel free to offer any suggestions on the class' flavor, mechanics, or power level.
