Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

Those who honor the path of Horris the Horned Lord are called spelleaters. Originally a Primal Path limited to minotaurs, Spelleaters brand themselves with magic capturing runes all over their bodies. These runes activate during the barbarian’s rage, turning magic against the very creatures that first cast it.

As part of their initiation each Spelleater is branded or tattooed with arcane symbols all over their body. These symbols draw magic into them like magnets and cause the energy to flow through the veins of the Spelleater, much as a sorcerer’s magic does. This magic channels into the barbarian’s weapon or fists, empowering their strikes with the raw force of magic.

Originally Spelleaters were servants to a dark god — the strongest, smartest, and fiercest of minotaurs. Over the course of time, other races watched with horror as swaths of mages fell in bloody combat with savage warriors immune to many of their spells. Unwilling that such bloodbaths would occur again, mages studied captured Spelleaters, unraveling their secrets. Then, said wizards, warlocks and otherwise made their own Spelleaters.

At first the goal was self preservation but over time wizards warred as they are wont to do and warlocks hungered for power. Each with their own motives, spellcasters from near and far battled alongside their own Spelleaters.

Detection Shroud

3rd-level Path of the Spell Eater feature

You are immune to any effect that would sense your emotions or read your thoughts, as well as all divination spells, unless you allow it.

Rage of the Spell Eater's

3rd-level Path of the Spell Eater feature

While raging, you have resistance against the damage from spells and other magical effects. Also, whenever you succeed on a saving throw against a spell or magical effect, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1). They vanish if any of them are left when your rage ends.

Arcane Vortex

6th-level Path of the Spell Eater feature

If you are raging and a creature targets you with a spell or magical effect or target's an area that includes you, you can spend your reaction to awaken your runic power to absorb the brunt of the effects. In doing so, you and the space you occupy become the only target of the spell or magical effect.

If the spell or magical effect makes multiple attack rolls; such as Grave Bolts from a Deathlock Mastermind or Scorching Ray; you become the target of each attack roll made. If the spell or magical effect affects an area; such as Steam Breath from a Dragon Turtle or fireball; the space you occupy becomes the only area of effect the spell or magical effect targets, and all other targeted spaces are negated.

Rend Magic

10th-level Path of the Spell Eater feature

Whenever you make a weapon attack, you can coat your weapons with your runic magic to bypass the magical defensives and rend their connection to the weave. This energy coat's the weapon’s ammunition, or the weapon itself. Make the attack roll as normal. Spells that provide magical defensives such as Mage Armor or shield no longer provide a benefit against this attack as well as magical items that grant a bonus to it's AC. On a hit, the target can’t cast spells other than cantrips or take actions that are part of a spell that it has already casted until the end of your next turn. This effect doesn't automatically break concentration of a spell, but the creature must make that check as normal.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Arcane Control

14th-level Path of the Spell Eater feature

Your Spell Eater rune's has transformed you into unstoppable monster. When you use your Arcane Vortex to absorb a spell or magical effect, you can add your rage damage bonus to your saving throws and AC against the effect. In doing so, you absorb a portion of the energy and the first time you hit with a weapon attack on your next turn, the target takes an extra force damage equal to your barbarian level.
