Base Class: Barbarian
Barbarians who walk the path of the scarred face have no connection to or have lost their ability to channel their primal energies. These barbarians have turned to a powered drug that puts them back in control of their primal nature, allowing them to enter a rage. However, this is an aberration. When taking the drug while not in combat, their behavior is erratic, abrasive, abusive, and often violent. Viewed as an unpredictable threat to their communities, those who refuse to stop using the drug are forced into exile, their faces branded with a tear so that clans everywhere will know these barbarians should not be welcomed.
Those banished from their communities often find each other, establishing makeshift societies organized around possession of the drug. Many will quest to find as much of it as they can, buying it when they have to, stealing it when they are able. Others toil away trying to recreate the substance from scratch. When taking the drug in combat, these barbarians enter into a mindless frenzy unleashing reckless attacks and while also being undeterred by damage. They become impossible to command or control. When under the influence of the drug while not in combat—which they often are—Scarred Face barbarians are talkative to a fault, quick to anger, and oblivious to the consequences of their actions. They need more of the drug each time they enter a rage, and their loyalty eventually becomes dedicated solely to the drug.
The Inglorious Basterd
At 3rd level, Scarred Face barbarians can choose to go into a frenzy when you rage or receive an AC boon. If you choose frenzy, for the duration of your rage you can make a single melee weapon attack as a bonus action on each of your turns after this one. If you choose the AC boon you gain +4 AC for 1 minute and can expend an additional rage slot to regain 1 HP if reduced to 0. When your rage ends, you suffer one level of exhaustion.
Say Hello To My Little Friend
Scarred Face barbarians gain a companion who can sniff out their drugs and retrieve them discretely from tight spaces. When both barbarian and companion have taken the drug, the barbarian can warg their animal companion. See Find Familiar rules and functions. The creature must be small.
You Can Only Hope to Contain It
Your rage is so extreme that your chaotic mind is impenetrable and your body can only be limited or controlled by physical impediments while raging. You don't perceive the attempt to control you as magic, it simply does not register with you. If you are influenced by a control spell of any kind when you enter your rage, the effect is suspended for the duration of the rage.
King Kong Ain't Got Nothin' on Me
In gaining control of your behavior using the rage drug while not in combat, you have sharpened your intellect and supercharged your ambition. You have a network of street-level operatives in most regional cities who will rally to your cause when called upon in hopes of being given more of the drug. However, protecting this empire still demands violence. Whenever your supremacy is challenged while not in combat, you may enter a rage to initiate combat without expending a rage slot. You may also add 2x your proficiency bonus on all Intimidation rolls.
In combat, you no longer need to be precious of the drug. As a bonus action, you can send an ally of your choice into a rage for 1 minute without expending a rage slot.
