Base Class: Artificer
Very few people ever get to tread their feet on other planes of existence, mingling among the otherworldly and alien. Fewer yet get to do so regularly. Planar Explorers are artificers with a heart for adventure and a hunger for knowledge about the multiverse. Using arcane devices known as Planar Compasses, these individuals are able to teleport across great distances in an instant, create harmful bursts of interplanar energy and break through the boundaries between planes.
Bonus Proficiencies
Beginning when you choose this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the Intelligence (Arcana) skill and with navigator's tools.
Planar Explorer Spells
At 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Planar Explorer Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Planar Compass
Also at 3rd level, you’ve learnt how to create a special tool that allows you to teleport and travel across planes. As part of a long rest, you can imbue a set of navigator's tools with your magic, transforming them into a Planar Compass. You can only have one Planar Compass at a time. Your Planar Compass functions as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells and while wielding it, you automatically know what plane of existence you’re on.
Your Planar Compass has a number of charges equal to your Intelligence modifier, and regains any spent charges at the end of a long rest. You can spend a charge from your Planar Compass to conjure an arcane rift in an unoccupied space within 60 feet of you. Your rift has the appearance of a distorted and semi-translucent 5-foot-diameter circle of magical force. A conjured rift lasts for 1 minute, or until you’re incapacitated. For the duration, you can cast any of your artificer spells as if you were standing in the rift’s space. Additionally, you can use your rifts to perform any of the following abilities:
Rift Evasion. As a reaction to being targeted by an attack or being forced to make a saving throw, you can teleport to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of your conjured rift.
Rift Burst. As a bonus action, you can cause the conjured rift to explode with dimensional energy. Each creature within 15 feet of your rift must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d6 force damage. On a successful save, it takes half damage. After using this feature, the rift vanishes.
Rift Displacement. As a bonus action, you can teleport yourself or a willing creature within 60 feet of your conjured rift to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the rift.
Dimensional Defenses
At 5th level, you’ve become inoculated to the dangers of teleportation and interplanar travel. You have resistance to force damage. In addition, you have advantage on saving throws against effects caused by interplanar travel and cannot be teleported against your will.
Enhanced Compass
At 9th level, you’ve fine-tuned your Planar Compass. The abilities of your Planar Compass feature improve in the following ways:
Rift Evasion. After using your Rift Evasion ability, you gain a number of temporary hit points equal to your artificer level. These temporary hit points last for 1 hour, or until you finish a short or long rest.
Rift Burst. The damage of your Rift Burst ability increases to 4d6.
Rift Displacement. After using your Rift Displacement ability, the creature that teleported becomes invisible until the beginning of its next turn, or until it attacks or casts a spell.
Interplanar Jaunt
At 15th level, your Planar Compass has been perfected, allowing you to travel between realms. You can cast the Plane Shift spell once per long rest without expending a spell slot, provided you use your Planar Compass as your spellcasting focus. When Plane Shift is cast in this way, you do not need any material components and can freely choose which plane you wish to travel to.

Posted Jun 4, 2025This is realy cool! I'm in the processes of making dimensionally themed subclasses for all the classes and I'm wondering if you'd mind if I use this for inspiration for the Artificer subclass?
