.... Thus, you can enter the undercroft by breaking the door (Strength check)....
// OOC - straight strength check or athletics? //
"Woah, Erme, that is one bright light, but good idea - can anyone help me with this? I don't want to bruise my sword arm's shoulder breaking this blasted door open."

"If someone wants to help me, we can do it together. But I want the rest of us to be ready for whatever comes out of there."
Donavich says, "I will take you to the undercroft door. My son's name was Doru. He was my only son and my only relative since my wife died." and leads you back down the hallway to the door closest to the entrance on the right. ***He opens the door.***
"Time and neglect have punched holes in the ceiling of this moldy room, which contains a few broken roof shingles amid puddles of water. In one corner, set into the floor, is a heavy wooden trapdoor held shut with a chain and a padlock. A young man's screams can be heard through the door."
(OOC: this might be why people are freaking out, LOL Thpas included)
// I thought you were making a reference to Dr. Strange with the "come to bargain" bit, which was why I responded about dying :) As to the readying, I guess I was expecting someone to "Leroy Jenkins" the door and so wanted to be prepared in case the thing came rushing at us! :D //
(OOC: totes correct about the Dr. Strange reference, however, not trying for tpk on this encounter, LOL)
The door smashes open (the Strength Check DC was 12) revealing stairs behind them.

Devious serpent folk devoid of compassion, yuan-ti manipulate other creatures by arousing their doubts, evoking their fears, and elevating and crushing their hopes. From remote temples in jungles, swamps, and deserts, the yuan-ti plot to supplant and dominate all other races and to make themselves gods.
Valanthe stalks down the stairwell as well, alongside Erme. As she's walking down she's preparing to use her innate ability to cast Faerie Fire (DC 13 DEX save) centered on Doru the moment she sees him.
Byllemura follows from a distance (15 ft. or so), quarterstaff at the ready. "If you prefer, I can conjure glowing orbs and provide sufficient light for all of us."
Emre stays vigilant, calling back, "Your eyes should adjust soon—we should have a decent amount of light thanks to my shield, but by all means light up some other things!"
"In that case, let there be light" mutters Byllemura focusing on her staff, with a slight wave of her left hand. As soon as she finishes her incantation, four orbs appear out of nowhere, one above each of her companions and her, shedding dim light around them.
Valanthe looks at the light above her head, looks at Byllemura, looks back at the light, back to Byllemura and then nods in the direction of the darkened room.
// I wish there was a photo of this - like all 4 of our characters, trying to get through the door down the stairs like the three stooges, each with a dancing light above each head and two light spells beaming - we'd be a veritable lighthouse of weapons and shields.... LOL //
Valanthe, as if suddenly remembering her heritage, squints her eyes and mutters under her breath, "Too much light..."

"Byllemura, can you send those lights down the stairs in front of us?" Asks Emre. "That way we can extend how far we can see, and not overwhelm Valanthe."
"The church's undercroft has rough-hewn walls and a floor made of damp clay and earth. Rotting wooden pillars strain under the weight of the wooden ceiling. Candlelight from the chapel above slips through the cracks, allowing you to glimpse a gaunt shape in the far corner."

"Emre, if it is too dark in here for you, I can help"
@DM, @EMRE
If Emre's ok with it I can cast light on your shield so that it emits a spooky red glow, illuminating whats in front of you.
