Can we get some kind of guide for setting up modifiers? I've been trying to add my homebrew Faun race and I've spent ages trying to tweak my modifiers but they never work at all when I try to create a new character... I'm not trying to do anything that complicated either:
Base Race: Faun - +2 DEX, -1 STR, +2 Languages
Subraces (Deer, Goat or Horse) - Another +1 Stat and a single skill Proficiency for each.
Also when you pick a subrace from the character creation you don't get to see any of the details for the base race (which is pretty much where all of the detail is in mine, following the convention established in the books). To get there you have to follow a not-so-prominent link that takes you completely out of chargen... That doesn't make much sense to me.
Hi MoarPye, let's see if we can't create your Faun.
To start from the beginning, begin by adding a new racial trait. Name it, write a description, and confirm that. Only then can you begin to add modifiers.
To add an Ability Score Increase, click into the trait you've presumably called Ability Score Increase. If you've copied another race as a template, one that already has Ability Score Increase, you can just use that—altering the description to show the ability scores you want instead of its original scores.
Once you're editing your 'Ability Score Increase' trait, click ADD A MODIFIER on the lower half of the screen. If you've copied a template and the 'Ability Score Increase' already has modifiers there, click to edit them instead.
From there you select Bonus in the first dropdown menu. Next, select Dexterity Score in the following dropdown box. Finally, add the desired value into the Fixed Value box—in this case, just write 2 on its own, without the apostrophes. Click SAVE, and your race now has has +2 Dexterity baked into it, fully functional in the character builder.
Click to ADD A MODIFIER again within the same trait, then repeat the process with Strength Score instead of Dexterity Score, with a -1 in the Fixed Value box, to give your Faun the negative modifier.
The same principle follows for adding another score to a subclass. The correct modifier is always Bonus--> <Ability> Score --> Fixed Value: <x>
Languages and skill proficiency work in a similar manner.
Languages: Make another racial trait, name and describe it, then save it, then add a modifier. For languages you want to click 'Language' form the dropdown box, not Bonus. In the following dropdown box, you can now pick a specific language, or give them 'Choose a Language' to let the player pick their own when using your race in the character builder. Add additional modifiers into the same trait, following the same process, to add multiple languages. In your case here, two.
For skills, make another trait, etc etc, then when you go to add modifiers, select Proficiency from the first box. In the following dropdown menu you will have a long list of skills, tools, and equipment. Find the specific skill you wish to add, select it, then save it.
Let us know if you have any more questions. If you wish to submit the race publicly, we recommend thoroughly testing it yourself in the character builder. If you find something's not working correctly, and can't figure out the solution, you are welcome to post again, including a link to your race (it will have a unique URL from the full details/edit page), that a moderator or developer can use to view it and help.

Cool I've been trying variations on Bonus > Ability Score Maximum > DEX > Fixed Value: 2... I'd mistakenly thought that your method would make it a hard '2' based on the tooltip, but I've overlooked the difference between 'Set' and 'Bonus'

Man I totally overlooked the 'Choose' option... I almost had it, except I thought 'All' would let me choose from all the languages... There really should be some way to sort interactives like 'Choose a Language' to the top of the list rather than lost within the alphabetical order.
I still have a couple of questions before I try to publish it though:
1) Does "Fey Ancestry: You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep." require a modifier of some sort? Or is that just a trait that players should be able to remember.
2) I'm still concerned that the none of the base-race details are displayed even though you can only choose one of the Subraces at character creation. Am I really supposed to copy/paste those details into each Subrace too? If so, what's the point in having a base-race at all? ... Also the Subrace traits are sorted above the base-race traits on the race selection screen, but that really should be the other way around right? I have set the Display Order on each trait, numbering 1-3 on the base-race traits, and then 4-5 on each of the subrace ones... But that's not the way it displays at all... The display order is 5, 4, 2, 1, 3, which is their order of creation from newest to oldest.
[edit] Also if I publish the base race do the subraces come along for the ride, or do I need to publish all four of them seperately?
For Fey Ancestry, you may benefit by trying to making a copy of the Elf race, and see how its done there. Effectively you give it a modifier of Advantage-->Saving Throws-->and then type 'against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep' in the details box.
The parent race's details aren't displayed when making a subrace, because you're making a subrace. The parent race details are displayed in the base-race. If you are trying to create something with only one subrace, where you want everything displayed, you should just make a race. If you want multiple subraces, then the base-race should contain the majority of traits, with each subrace having its own unique bonuses. If you add in the parent race's traits into a subrace, then users will get duplicated traits when they make one in the D&D Beyond character builder.
As for publishing, all of the parts need to be published, parent and subraces. As moderators we have to judge each piece independently. However, if we accept them, when users add your parent race to their homebrew collections, they receive all of the subraces with it
It might be worth playing around with the Elf race and its subraces, both in the character builder and by making copies of them in the homebrew creator (use them as templates to see how they were made).
I'm not sure how you're viewing your (sub)races, but mine display the traits correctly as I list them. You can have the display order as 1, 2, 3 and so on on the main race, then have 1, 2, 3 and so on in the subrace. The subrace's traits should always be displayed after the main race, in the character builder.
I have attached two images. One shows my own homebrewed subrace displayed on its own. The other shows the stages of selecting it in the character builder. Note how, when alone, it does not show the parent race. When looking at it in the character builder, it shows all the parent race and subrace traits for you to browse through. Once you have selected it in the character builder, it shows the parent race traits nearer the top, beneath 'Racial Traits', and then all traits of note below it (these are the ones you have chosen to allow to be shown on the character builder, when making the homebrew — there is a tickbox for each trait).
All the base stuff about the Faun race (circled in red) is missing at the character creation. There's also no link to the parent race during the character creation... You have to click on "Goat Faun Details Page" first, taking you completely out of the character creation screen, it doesn't automatically open in a new tab, and only then do you actually see the link to the parent race.
But all of the traits are properly ordered now at least. Maybe because I've rebooted since I last posted.... Should have tried a CTRL-F5 in hindsight.
It's a bit odd that there are no traits from the parent race in the first image, and having tested it I can confirm that's just how it displays for homebrew race/subraces, you've not missed anything. In the same vein, whilst there's only a link to the subrace for official races, that link takes you to the parent race's page, incorporating the subrace details within it—for homebrew races, you just get sent to the subrace's page alone. I will make sure the developers are made aware of these, those are good catches.
However, even with official races, you only get one line of flavor text from the base race at this stage, so as not to flood the boxes with multiple paragraphs. Given that the link for more details only sends you to the homebrew subrace's details, I can see how this is very limiting.
Thanks for bringing attention to these! Hopefully, aside from these minor display issues, you've managed to assign all the modifiers you wish to?
Im pretty sure thats working as intended for how the Builder works, vs. how a full race details page displays. In the builder we dont display all the additional fluff text, only short descriptions. Off memory, its the snippets that get displayed in the builder (I'd need to play around and test it to be 100% sure).
If you compare MoarPye's first image to the right-hand side of my second image, you can see my Sky Gnome subrace, attached to an official parent race, has a summary of Racial Traits from the parent race toward the top, whilst MoarPye's homebrew subrace shows none of his homebrew parent race's traits. There's just an empty space in that area (beneath the text: 'Small Fey creatures that share traits Deer, Goats or Horses').
Secondly, my Sky Gnome, being a homebrew subrace of an official race, takes you to just the Sky Gnome subrace page, when clicking the 'Sky Gnome Details Page' link. This is because homebrew subraces are obviously not listed on the page for official gnomes. In comparison, the official Rock Gnome subrace has a link taking you to the whole gnome page, which includes Rock Gnomes. This is all correct.
However, subraces of homebrew parent races still only take you to the subrace's page, not the whole homebrew parent race's page that includes the subrace. This could be an intentional choice, but there's no reason for these not to take you to the parent race's page, given that it's all homebrew in this scenario.
Hopefully that makes some sense! They're a little tricky to explain, and admittedly fairly minor, but there are definitely one or two issues here.
Unfortunately you can't remove pictures at this moment in time. Until this is changed, an easy workaround is to upload a blank white image instead of the previous picture.
My version of the Faun race was approved. I think it all works fine (except that thing about race details not being displayed during character creation) but I'd appreciated it if someone could look them over and alert me to any problems I might have overlooked.
Is it possible to add Variants to homebrew races? Because I cannot currently make an Aquatic Variant of my Michtims. Is that because I haven't enabled "Variants" on the parent race? Thanks.

MoarPye: I've had a look over it and it's 99% perfect. The only thing missing is a modifier to Fey Ancestry. To replicate how the official elf/half-elf race has it, it should have a modifier associated with the trait.
Add A Modifier-->Advantage-->Saving Throws-->And type the following text into the Details box: against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep
It doesn't make a huge difference, but adds in a reminder below a player's ability scores on their D&D Beyond character sheet.

Eisenfuchs: I am happy to say it is definitely possible to create a variant for your homebrew race! There are two ways to create variants, one for homebrew races, one for existing races.
To create a variant for a homebrew race, edit the parent race and scroll down to where it says Variants, just below Basic Information and Racial Traits. From there click Add A Variant, and it should take you through to begin creating your Michtim variant! Let me know if you have any trouble with this.
Damnit, I knew I forgot something... My new conundrum now though is that I can't seem to edit it anymore. I can only make a new copy of the base Faun race, but then it loses the connection to the three original subraces, so I would have to redo all three of those from scratch.

I'm not sure it's worth it just for Fey Ancestry.
That doesn't sound like it's working correctly - if you create a new version, you should be able to link the existing subraces to the updated version of the Base race. Can you create the new version (the old version still remains listed), and then when you go to Subraces, does it allow you to link to a subrace in your collection?
Not that I can see... There are no subraces listed after you click "Create New Version", and if you then select "Add a Sub Race" it takes you directly into a blank creation page. I can't see any option to include an existing subrace.
[Edit] I published all three subraces, so they're no longer editable either. Could that be preventing me from working with them? These four items (Base Race + 3 Sub Races) are the only homebrew I have in my collection and all of them are now published, so it's hard for me to troubleshoot.
[Edit2] Even if I "Create New Version" for all three of the subraces, then do the same on the base race, I still can't see any option to import either the original subraces or the new versions of same
Im wondering if you also create a new version of the subrace if it will allow linking. If that doesn't work, then it's 100% not working as it should and I'll need to start whipping Hartless more :P
Well, obviously, it depends on which direction you want to take it, but I would guess that dragonborn would be easier.
