How to Get Started With the Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack

Say “yes” to adventure with the Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack! This digital starter set is the best way to start playing on D&D Beyond and contains everything you need to launch into adventure—monsters, quickplay maps, and more.

This guide will walk you through the simple steps to set up your campaign, invite your party, and start playing.

Premade Characters in the Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack

We are currently working on fulfilling premade characters for this product and revamping the premade character experience on D&D Beyond.

These updates should be available in a few weeks. In the meantime, see Step 3 for advice on getting started using existing premade characters.

Step 1 — Get the Digital Adventure Pack

Begin by purchasing the Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack on D&D Beyond. Once it's unlocked, all of its contents are added to your account.

The Digital Adventure Pack is included in the Heroes of the Borderlands Ultimate Bundle, if you would also like the physical board game.

Step 2 — Create Your Campaign

From the D&D Beyond homepage, go to Collections > My Campaigns in the main menu. Click “Create a Campaign,” and give it a name.

Step 3 — Invite Your Players

Every great quest needs great heroes. On your Campaign page, click "Create Unassigned Premade Character." Select the following options from the 50th Anniversary characters:

Invite your friends to your campaign using the share link. When they create a D&D Beyond account and join your campaign, they'll be able to choose one of the premade characters you added to the campaign from Heroes of the Borderlands.

Step 4 — Prepare Your Materials

With your party gathered, you can go to Sources > Heroes of the Borderlands from the main menu and choose the starting point for your adventure.

We recommend starting with the Wilderness adventure. When you select your option, you'll see a page full of Dungeon Master information to help you run your games.

These adventures have been structured in a way that teaches you how to run games while playing, so you don’t need to read the entire adventure ahead of time! Instead, familiarize yourself with the Getting Started section, then proceed to the next step.

Step 5 — Set the Stage with Maps

Maps is D&D's official virtual tabletop and lets you bring your adventure to life on both your screen and your players’ screens.

This allows players to track their character’s movements and strategically plan their next move during encounters. It's also helpful for Dungeon Masters to remember where monsters are located in battle!

Maps is available for all D&D Beyond users to run their games—no subscription required.

The Maps landing page on D&D Beyond

To set up Maps for your campaign:

  • Open Maps by going to Tools > Maps VTT from the main menu.
  • In the Select Game dropdown, select your Heroes of the Borderlands campaign and click "Go."
  • Click the "Select Map" dropdown at the top of the screen and click "Open Map Browser."
  • Select "Quickplay Maps" and scroll to Heroes of the Borderlands
  • You'll see a list of maps for various encounters. The Caves of Chaos maps are first, so if you're starting with the Wilderness adventure as noted above, scroll past the Caves of Chaos maps to the Trail map.
  • Click the "+" buttons next to each map and select the Quickplay option. This adds pre-configured maps with Fog of War and monster tokens, so you can skip the prep and get to playing!

Running Exploration on Maps

When you're running an encounter that has an associated quickplay map, here's how to use it:

  • Drag character tokens into the starting area (denoted by the "Players Start Here" marker).
  • Use the Fog of War tool to reveal new areas as the party progresses through exploration.
  • Unhide monster tokens at the perfect dramatic moment.

Running Combat on Maps

If combat breaks out, here's how to use Maps' built-in Combat Encounters to help manage your battles:

  • Open the sidebar in the top left to access the Combat Encounter feature.
  • Use the Select tool (Shortcut: "V") to select the party members and monsters involved in the fight (using Shift + Left Click).
  • Click "Add to Encounter" in the toolbar that appears.
  • Then, roll for Initiative and click "Start Combat."
  • From within the Initiative Order menu, you can view a monster's stat block and roll its attacks by selecting the monster.

Step 6 — Gather Your Party and Play

With your campaign set, maps ready, and heroes assembled, it's time to dive in. Send the Maps link to your players and hit "Start Session" from within the VTT. You’re ready to weave your tale of danger, glory, and discovery!

The Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack gives you everything you need for your first steps into Dungeons & Dragons. All that's left to do is say “yes” to adventure!
