Base Class: Fighter
Fully aware of the multiplicative power of the group, the Bodyguard strives to keep their weaker fellows safe from harm, and to push others to optimum positions in battle. This class focuses on damage mitigation and controlling enemy attention, with some ability to help his party members inflict greater damage, with later options giving the Bodyguard the ability to focus more on their own damage output at the cost of their ability to control enemy aggression or continue their party-wide focus and help their team endure through tough attacks.
Prime Target
The Bodyguard receives five Grit, usable in conjunction only with the maneuvers listed for this subclass. All Grit is regained after a short or long rest.
Focused on protecting their current employer, the Bodyguard names one enemy as their Prime Target at the beginning of the encounter. Throughout the encounter, the Bodyguard can perform a variety of maneuvers abetting their Prime Target, or aiding their party:
To use their maneuvers, the Bodyguard must begin by using the Goad maneuver:
Goad. By expending their bonus action, the Bodyguard can goad a Prime Target that they can see, and that can see them, into attacking them. The enemy must succeed against an Intelligence Saving Throw against the Bodyguard's Save DC or be forced into attacking the Bodyguard on that enemy's turn. Spellcasters must make a Concentration check if currently concentrating on a spell.
After using Goad, the following maneuvers are available:
1. Intercede. When adjacent to a party member and their prime target, the Bodyguard can expend a Grit die and their reaction to reduce the impact of an enemy's blow. The Bodyguard becomes the target of the attack if they are not already, taking half of the total damage dealt by the enemy in that turn, instead of full damage.
2. Mark. By expending their bonus action and a Grit die, the Bodyguard can mark their prime target and give all party members in a 30-foot radius a d3 damage bonus against the marked target for the next 5 rounds.
3. Disengage. By spending both a Grit point and an action either attempting an attack or flourishing their weapons, the Bodyguard can allow an ally within line of sight to immediately move half their normal speed without incurring opportunity attacks.
Stand Alone // Stand Together
Having done much to keep their companions fighting, the Bodyguard now ponders if they should continue their group-wide efforts or focus on improving their own abilities. The player must choose whether to Stand Alone or Stand Together.
Stand Alone provides the following benefits:
1. Intercede no longer requires an adjacent party member to function.
2. Mark now only affects the Bodyguard, while the damage die increases to 1d6.
3. Goad now gives the Bodyguard advantage on their attacks against the target for that turn.
Stand Together provides the following benefits:
1. The Bodyguard can now have a second Prime Target, and Goad affects both targets at once.
2. With every ally in a 30-foot radius, the Bodyguard gains +1 to the Saving Throw DC of their Goad.
3. Intercede now functions against attacks that affect an area (note: breath weapons, fireballs, etc.), with damage being halved for all allies in the area, ONLY if the Bodyguard expends two Grit die.
Focused Mind
The Bodyguard focuses on their duty to their employer, gaining the following effects that are renewed after a long rest:
1. The Bodyguard can choose to automatically succeed on the first charm, dominate, or fear effect against them that day. Once this automatic success is used, the Bodyguard retains the ability to roll with advantage against the next two instances of these effects.
2. The Bodyguard can, instead of the above effect, have a party member automatically succeed on these effects, but does not gain the benefit of advantage after this use.
Unyielding
When the Bodyguard rolls initiative and has no Grit remaining, they regain one Grit die.
Reserves
If the Bodyguard falls below 50% of their HP, then on their turn, they regain 5 + their Constitution modifier in hit points until above the 50% threshold.
