Base Class: Wizard

An ancient tradition of an order now lost to time, the modern-day Magi of the Staff are a loose collection of wizards who have unearthed ancient staff fighting techniques. Taking practical combat lessons from crumbling manuscripts was no easy feat, but the results are promising. In the world of Toril (Faerun), these techniques may have come from the ancient Raumathari battle mages in the distant east.

Every Staff Has Potential

When you adopt this tradition at level 2, any staff you wield is considered an arcane focus. In addition, any staff you wield is considered a magical weapon with +1 to hit and damage rolls (this bonus stacks with any existing enchantment the staff possesses), and as long as you are wielding a staff your AC increases by 1.

You also gain proficiency with woodcarvers’ tools if you don’t already have it.

Ignore Me At Your Own Peril

Starting at 2nd level, you can perform an additional reaction each round. That reaction can only be used to perform an opportunity attack with a quarterstaff.

Extra Attack

Starting at 6th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

Spell Storing Staff

Beginning at 10th level, you can store spells into a single staff you possess, although this process requires you to attune to the staff like a magic item. The staff then stores spells cast into it, holding them until you use them.

  • The staff can store up to one- third of your level, rounded up, in spell levels at a time (at 10th level, this would be 3.33 rounded up to 4 spell levels).
  • You can cast a spell into the staff by touching the staff as the spell is cast.
  • The spell has no effect, other than to be stored in the staff. If the staff can't hold the spell, the spell is expended without effect.
  • The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses.
  • While holding the staff, you can cast any spell stored in it.
  • The spell uses the slot level of the original casting but is otherwise treated as if you cast the spell. The spell cast from the staff is no longer stored in it, freeing up space.

Spell Striking Staff

Starting at 14th level, whenever you successfully hit with a melee attack with the staff, you may choose to expend one of the spells it is storing, targeting the creature struck. The spell must be one that either requires a spell attack to deliver normally or that targets a single creature. The spell attack is an automatic success, if one was required, but not a critical hit even if the staff attack was a critical hit. The creature must still make any saving throws required.
