Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Your Oath is to a particular person, a mage of some kind to be more precise. Perhaps they are your child, your lover, or you are simply duty bound to them through your work, but whatever the case is, you take it on yourself to see that they are safe and protected. You offer your assistance to them, swearing to defend them against all the dangers they may encounter, as even though they may be immensely powerful in their craft, not even they can defend themselves against all the dangers that lurk in the world.

This causes the forming of a mystical bond between you and the mage you are sworn to, your ward; a bond that grants you an extra measure of magical power and a permanent connection to your mage.

Paladins who follow this path don't have tenets as such, they don't care about specific ideals, or at least their oath doesn't require them to like other paladins. They care about their wards first and foremost, and nothing more.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed in the Oath of the Mage Guard Spells table. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how oath spells work.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Vow of Protection. As an action you can force a creature you can see to do no harm to a specific creature. The target must succeed on a Charisma saving throw, and on a failed save, you pick a different creature you can see within 30 feet of you. For the next minute, the target of this feature can't attack or do anything that would knowingly harm the chosen creature (such as a spell with an area of effect).

Savior's Promise. You can use your Channel Divinity to restore the power of your Lay of Hands. As an action, you may restore a number of hit points in your Lay on Hands pool equal to twice your Paladin level. This cannot cause your Lay on Hands pool to go above its base daily amount.

Protective Bond

Also at 3rd level, you are sworn to protect your mage with your own life. When you gain this feature, choose a willing humanoid as your ward. A ward must have the Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature. If your ward is killed, you cannot cast your Mage Guard spells until your ward is revived or you choose a new ward, which you can do by means of an eight-hour bonding ritual.

If you and your ward are on the same plane of existence and your ward is not dead, you sense your ward through the bond. You are always aware of the current hit points of and any conditions affecting your ward. You can speak telepathically to them, provided they are within a number of feet equal to 10 times your paladin level, and as an action, you can know the relative direction and general distance of your ward from you.

Your ward can sense your hit points, conditions, and location through the bond, and can speak telepathically to you, in the same manner as you do.

Aura of the Barrier

Starting at 7th level, the bond between you and your ward acts as a barrier for you both in battle. Whenever you start your turn within 10 feet of your ward, both your ward and you gain temporary hit points equal to half your paladin level + your charisma modifier.

When you reach 18th level in this class, the range of the effect increases to 30 feet.

Mystical Sacrifice

At 15th level, you can call forth the magic of the bond between you and your ward to protect them from harm. Whenever your ward were to take damage, as long as you are within 30 feet of them, you may use your reaction to magically switch places with them. Your ward magically teleports to the space you occupied when you activated this feature, and you teleport and occupy your ward's space, taking the damage it would have taken.

You may use this special reaction twice, and gain the ability to do so again when you finish a short or long rest.

Ultimate Protector

At 20th level, the bond you and your ward share can be temporarily maximized for you to channel its magic to its highest potential. As an action, you become a beacon for all this protective magic, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You gain resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing and Slashing damage.
  • If you are within 30 feet of your ward, all attacks them have disadvantage.
  • As you activate this feature, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your paladin level (rounded up). For example, you can recover up to 10 levels worth of spell slots. You can recover two 5th-level slots, or two 4th-level slots and a 2nd-level slot.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
