Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Rangers that stay in darkness usually have a different kind of bond with different kinds of creatures.

Shadow Companion

Ranger's Shadow Companion

At 3rd level, you Summon a shadow companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you. Choose a beast that is no larger than Medium and that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower and your shadow creature takes that form and stat block. Add your proficiency bonus to the shadow creature’s AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Its hit point maximum equals its normal maximum or four times your ranger level, whichever is higher. Like any creature, the shadow creature can spend Hit Dice during a short rest. Any elemental damage type

The shadow creature obeys your commands as best as it can. It takes its turn on your initiative. On your turn, you can verbally command the shadow creature where to move (no action required by you). You can use your action to verbally command it to take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, or Help action. If you don’t issue a command, the shadow creature takes the Dodge action. Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action. While traveling through your favored terrain with only the shadow creature, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.

If you are incapacitated, the shadow creature acts on its own, focusing on protecting you and itself. The shadow creature never requires your command to use its reaction, such as when making an opportunity attack.

the shadow creature remains until it is reduced to 0 hit points until you use this feature to summon the shadow creature again, or until you die. Anything the shadow creature was wearing or carrying is left behind when the shadow creature vanishes.

You can only change the shape of the shadow creature once per short rest. this changes to twice at 7th level, and three times at 11th level.

Once you summon the shadow creature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher to summon it.

Dread Ambusher

At 3rd level, you master the art of the ambush. You can give yourself a bonus to your initiative rolls equal to your Wisdom modifier.

At the start of your first turn of each combat, your walking speed increases by 10 feet, which lasts until the end of that turn. If you take the Attack action on that turn, you can make one additional weapon attack as part of that action. If that attack hits, the target takes an extra 1d8 damage of the weapon's damage type.

you gain darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision from your race, its range increases by 30 feet.

One with the Shadow

At 11th level, you and your shadow creature are also adept at evading creatures that rely on darkvision. While in darkness, you and your shadow creature are invisible to any creature that relies on darkvision to see you in that darkness.

Any attack made from dim light or darkness by you or your shadow creature gains an extra 1d6 necrotic damage.

Shadow Bonds

At 11th level, you and your shadow creature's bond strengthens, granting your shadow creature the following benefits:

  • When you or the shadow creature is healed, the other gains half of that healing. You can only use this twice a short rest.
  • Your shadow creature can now use multiattack if the form has one.
  • As a bonus action, you can command the shadow creature to take the Attack action.
  • Your shadow creature deals an additional 1d6 necrotic damage.
  • The shadow creature's weapon attacks are considered magical for the purpose of overcoming immunity and resistance to nonmagical attacks.
  • As an Action, you can gain one perception or movement trait the form of your shadow creature has for 1 hour. You can do this once a long rest.

Shadowy Dodge

Starting at 15th level, you and your shadow creature can dodge in unforeseen ways, with wisps of supernatural shadow around you. Whenever a creature makes an attack roll against you or your shadow creature and doesn't have advantage on the roll, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on it. You must use this feature before you know the outcome of the attack roll.
