Base Class: Barbarian
Due to proliferous imbibement of many alchemical elixirs and potions with incompatible magic effects, this Barbarian's blood has become infused with uncontrollable magic properties. When becoming enraged, these magical properties surge, causing unexpected benefits.
Alchemical Sense
3rd-level Path of Unstable Alchemy feature
As an action, you can sense the presence of unnatural liquids. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any potion, tincture, elixir, poison, or other alchemical concoctions within 60 ft. of you that isn’t behind total cover. This sense does not detect natural poisons or venoms, such as those from creatures or plants, unless they are part of a mixture, and does not inform you what the effects of the mixture might be.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Alchemical Surge
3rd-level Path of Unstable Alchemy feature
The various chemicals roiling inside you sometimes erupt from you. When you enter your rage, roll on the Unstable Alchemy table to determine the effect produced.
If the effect requires a saving throw, the DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier.
Unstable Alchemy
| d8 | Effect |
|---|---|
| 1 | The elixirs in your blood revitalize you, causing you to immediately gain hit points equal to 1d4 + your constitution modifier. If you are at full health, these become temporary hitpoints instead, lasting until depleted or your rage ends. This healing increases to 1d6 at level 6, 1d8 at level 10, 1d10 at level 14, and 1d12 at level 18. |
| 2 | Bone Spikes erupt from your flesh. For the duration of your rage, whenever a creature hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to cause them to take piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your strength modifier. This increases to 1d6 at level 6, 1d8 at level 10, 1d10 at level 14, and 1d12 at level 18. |
| 3 | Your skin hardens, taking on the appearance of rock or metal. For the duration of your rage, you gain resistance to all damage types except psychic. |
| 4 | You vanish, becoming invisible until your rage ends, or until you take any action other than movement. If this action is an attack, you gain advantage. |
| 5 | You gain exceptional speed. For the duration of your rage, your movement speed is increased by 15 feet. |
| 6 | Smoke billows out of your nostrils and you begin to belch flames. Each turn for the duration of your rage, you can take a bonus action to breathe fire at one enemy within 10 feet. On a failed save, the target takes 1d4 fire damage, or half as much on a successful save. This damage increases to 1d6 at level 6, 1d8 at level 10, 1d10 at level 14, and 1d12 at level 18. |
| 7 | Your appearance becomes distorted and semi-transparent, with an effect like heat waves or vibration. For the duration of your rage, creatures attacking you must do so at disadvantage. |
| 8 | You go into a rabid frenzy, your eyes glaze over and you begin foaming at the mouth. For the duration of your rage, you forgo the use of weapons and may only use unarmed attacks and natural weapons, and you may make an additional attack as a bonus action each turn. |
Iron Gut
6th-level Path of Unstable Alchemy feature
Your constant consumption of alchemical products has caused you to build up a resistance to ill effects. You no longer suffer negative effects from consuming spoiled food or drink, you have resistance to damage from any ingested, inhaled, or contact poisons or chemicals, and you recover from the effects of being poisoned after a short rest.
Toxic Physiology
10th-level Path of Unstable Alchemy feature
The unstable chemicals in your veins manifest as natural toxins. Whenever you hit with an unarmed attack or natural weapon attack, you deal an additional 1d4 poison damage.
Natural Catalyst
14th-level Path of Unstable Alchemy feature
Your body has adapted to the frequent use of potions and elixirs, granting you additional effects when consuming them. Any potions which restore hitpoints restore an additional amount equal to your barbarian level + your constitution modifier, and potions which grant a beneficial effect for a limited duration have their duration doubled. You are also able to discern the nature of potions, poisons, and other alchemical concoctions by sight or smell, revealing their effects to you.
