The Oath of Suffering is a truly sickening ideology. Abhorred by all but its most faithful adherents, it stands as a twisted lense through which one can draw perverse conclusions about the nature of existence. Feared and scorned across the realm for bringing about unending misery in their wake, the knights of torment whom carry with them these torturous vows are enemies to prosperity itself. Neither stalking their prey for consumption like the lion, nor feasting upon the forgotten dead like the vulture; a follower of the Oath of Suffering seeks instead only to cultivate agony in a living host, like some parasitic vanguard of misery.

Tenets of Suffering

The tenets of the Oath of Suffering are rarely spoken of by those of solemn thought and mind. To abide by such practices is to willingly relinquish one's life to a macabre fantasy wherein deprivation is codified.

Dignified Misery. To exist is to experience anguish. Without pain to serve as its antithesis, pleasure cannot exist. Therefore, to manifest suffering is to live with virtue.

Pursuits Unfettered. While pain may serve as a deterrent to others - it stands as your greatest source of motivation. Undertakings which lead to earthly suffering should not be avoided, as they often yield the greatest rewards.

Shameless Depravity. To manifest suffering into the world is to provide the foundation on which happiness may be measured. There is no shame in deriving joy when reveling in the misery of others.

A Balanced Existence. Just as you seek to indulge in misery, indulge too in the limitless pleasures of the world. A life fraught only in torment is one that grows numb to the joys brought by a fresh agony.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Divine Debilitation
As an action, you can overwhelm one creature with debilitating pain using your Channel Divinity, provided it is neither an undead or construct. Target a creature within 30 feet that has taken damage since the beginning of your last turn. That creature must make a Constitution saving throw. If its hit points are below half of their maximum value, then it has disadvantage on this saving throw.

On a failed save, any speed the target has can be no greater than 10 feet. The target has disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws, other than Constitution saving throws. Finally, if the target tries to cast a spell, it must first succeed on Constitution saving throw, or the casting fails and the spell is wasted. These effects last until the end of your next turn.

Enhanced Agony
You can use your Channel Divinity to magnify the intensity of the pain experienced by a wounded individual. When a creature within 30 feet takes damage from an attack or spell, you can use your reaction to cause that creature to take an additional amount of damage equal to half of the total damage inflicted by that attack or spell.

Echoes of Affliction

Beginning at 7th level, your burning desire to share pain with others comes to manifest itself in the minds of those surrounding you. Whenever you or a creature you can see within 10 feet of you takes damage, you can use your reaction to cause every other creature within that area to take an amount of psychic damage equal to your Charisma modifier. You have resistance to this damage.

At 18th level, the range of this ability extends to 30 feet.

Tortured Resilience

Beginning at 15th level, you gain proficiency in Constitution Saving Throws. Additionally, whenever you take damage you can add your Charisma modifier to the next melee weapon attack roll you make before the end of your next turn.

Vessel of Torment

At 20th level,  as an action, you can assume the form of an earthly avatar to the consummate suffering of all whom have ever existed, taking on a macabre appearance of your choice. For example, you may appear as a flayed figure whose exposed sinew strikes revulsion into its enemies, or an animated iron maiden that clambers about with maddening cries of agony. For 1 minute, you gain the following benefits.

  • You gain an additional attack as part of your attack action.
  • When you damage a creature with a weapon attack, it must make a Constitution saving throw. It makes this save at advantage if its hit points are above half of their maximum value after taking this damage. On a failed save, it is incapacitated until the end of its next turn.
  • When you damage a creature with a weapon attack, you can inflict 10 psychic damage to a number of other creatures within 30 feet up to your Charisma modifier.
