Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

While the School of the Arcane Purists strives to improve their magical capabilities by improving their bodies, there grew a splinter faction that strived for the inverse; improve their physical capabilities using magic. This ended up with both great success and utter catastrophe. Not only did they push their bodies beyond natural limitations, but in the process became addicted to the euphoric sensation of the magic they used that coursed through their veins. Most ended up either dead for one reason or another or taken captive for study. Some who either hadn’t fallen into addiction or had learned to control themselves enough eventually left the school, forever changed. Much like others who follow the Arcanist ways but do not officially attend the academy, some have ended following the same fate, but all are branded as Mana Addicts.

Former Arcanist

Before you became addicted to magic, you were a spellcaster in training, the knowledge of which you still retain. Beginning at 3rd level, you have the ability to cast spells. See chapter 10 in the Player’s Handbook for the general rules of spell casting. Additionally you are able to cast spells while Raging, but not concentrate on spells.

Cantrips: You Learn two cantrips of your choice from the wizard or arcane spell list. You learn an additional cantrip from the same list of your choice at 10th level.

Spell Slots: The Mana Addict spellcasting table shows you how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level or higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level of higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher: You know three 1st level wizard spells, including the arcane spell list, of your choice from the abjuration and evocation spells.

The Spells Known column of the Mana Addict table shows when you learn more wizard or arcane spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be an abjuration or evocation spell of your choice and must be of a level for which you have spell slots for.

The spells you learn at 8th, 14th, and 20th level can be from any school of magic. Spellcasting Ability: Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for your spells since you learn your spells through study and memorization, even if you go into a mindless rage when casting during combat. You use your Intelligence whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Intelligence modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

  • Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your intelligence modifier

  • Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your intelligence modifier

Hulking Rage

Beginning at 6th level, it becomes harder to tell where the magical enhancements end and the raw adrenaline begins. Whenever you rage you automatically gain the effects from the Enlarge spell as if you cast it on yourself. Its effects end with your rage. This has no effect if you already are, by some other means, huge.

Mana Imbued strength

Beginning at 10th level, your magic empowers your rage, and your rage empowers your magic. Whenever you cast a spell at level 1 or higher while raging, double your strength modifier until the end of your next turn. While raging you may also add your strength modifier to damage rolls on your cantrips.

Devourer of Magic

At 14th level, you have advantage on saving throws against spells while raging. You also gain resistance to magic damage while raging. Additionally you can spend your reaction to become immune to all damage from spells until the start of your next turn and instead heal for half of the damage you would have taken. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your constitution modifier(minimum of 1). This feature is refreshed on a long rest.
