Iai Weapons Shortswords and Longswords are your Iai Weapons. You gain proficiency with these weapons if you don't already have it and they are monk weapons for you. Many of this tradition's features work only with your Iai Weapons. To wield an Iai Weapon, you require a free hand to manipulate its scabbard.
One With The Blade You can use Iai Weapons to Deflect Missiles, and you can make attacks with them in place of unarmed strikes using your Martial Arts die instead of your weapon's damage die.
Nukitsuke and Nōtō You can draw your Iai Weapon as part of an Attack without using an item interaction. When you draw your Iai Weapon as part of an Attack, the attack gains a bonus to attack and damage rolls equal to your proficiency bonus. You can use your item interaction to sheathe your Iai Weapon into its scabbard at the end of your turn
Quick Hands You gain proficiency in Sleight of Hand. If you are already proficient, you can double your proficiency bonus on Sleight of Hand checks.
Breathing Technique At 3rd level, you establish your presence with slow inhales and quick exhales. When your Iai Weapon is stowed during combat, you enter a balanced state of breathing. Breathing like this gives you advantage on Dexterity and Constitution saving throws.
Preparation
Starting at 6th level, you add your Wisdom modifier to your initiative rolls. You gain advantage on the first Iai Weapon attack per turn against a target with a lower initiative than you.
In addition, as a free action when you roll initiative you may spit-spray your Iai Weapon with sacred alcohol. If you do, your Iai Weapon attacks count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
Tatehiza and Seiza
Starting at 11th level you have mastered sitting and kneeling stances, and gain the following benefits while wielding your Iai Weapon:
An attack roll does not have advantage on you from within 5ft while you are prone.
You do not have disadvantage on melee attack rolls while you are prone.
Standing up uses only 5 feet of your movement while you are prone.
Iaijutsu Duel
At 17th level as a reaction when an enemy makes an attack roll against you, you can spend 6 Ki points to make a Sleight of Hand check versus the attack roll. If you win the check, you may move up to half your movement speed towards your attacker without provoking opportunity attacks and make a single attack with your Iai Weapon. The attack has advantage and deals an additional 4 Martial Arts dice worth of damage. If you succeed by 5 or more, the attack is a guaranteed critical hit instead. On a natural or guaranteed critical hit, each hostile creature in a 60-foot cone originating from you in the direction you are facing must make a Dexterity saving throw versus your Ki save DC. A creature takes damage equal to half as much as the initial target on a failed save, or none on a successful one. A nonmagical object that isn’t being worn or carried also takes the full damage if it’s in the cone’s area. You can use this ability once per Long Rest.
