Base Class: Ranger
When a wizard embraces forbidden, volatile magic or a sorcerer loses control of their arcane power, a spellbreaker is not far behind. This ancient order of rangers tracks dangerous spellcasters, from rogue bards to demonic warlocks, and eliminates them before their magic can wreak havoc on an entire city or endanger the multiverse itself. They are trained in techniques to bypass magical defenses and rip small holes in the fabric of magic itself to catch unaware any spellcaster caught in their midst. While most spellbreakers execute their quarry or capture them for the authorities, a few still burn witches at the stake, earning all spellbreakers a grim reputation. For this reason alone, a mage on the run has good reason to look over their shoulder and fear the spellbreaker's arrival.
Spellbreaker Magic
Starting at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Spellbreaker Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.
Spellbreaker Spells
| Ranger Level | Spell |
|---|---|
| 3rd | detect magic |
| 5th | see invisibility |
| 9th | dispel magic |
| 13th | private sanctum |
| 17th | greater restoration |
Caster Hunter
At 3rd level, your training as a hunter of magic has given you unique insights into the supernatural. You gain proficiency in the Arcana skill and whenever you make an Intelligence (Arcana) check you gain a bonus to the check equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of +1).
Antimagic Strike
At 3rd level, you've begun to mastered the mage-slaying technique of cutting through magic itself. When you make an attack against a creature you can see, you may use your bonus action to deliver a small antimagic pulse.
For the duration of the attack and damage rolls, the effects of spells targeting the creature, as well as the properties and powers of magic items are suppressed. This disrupts spells like mage armor or mirror image which protect the creature, as well as spells like hellish rebuke which are triggered as a reaction to the attack or damage roll. On a hit, the creature takes an additional 1d4 force damage or an additional 2d4 force damage, if it was concentrating on a spell when it was attacked.
Spell Turning
By 7th level, you can shake off even the most potent magic and learn to twist it at its casting, gaining the following benefits:
- You learn the counterspell spell and can cast it once per long rest without expending a spell slot.
- You have advantage on saving throws against any spell that targets only you (not in an area of effect). If you roll a 19 or 20 for the save and the spell is equal to or less than half your ranger class level (rounded down), the spell has no effect on you and instead targets the caster, using the slot level, spell save DC, attack bonus, and spellcasting ability of the caster.
Weave Unwound
Beginning at 11th level, when you cast an abjuration spell that requires you to make an ability check as a part of casting that spell (as in dispel magic or counterspell), you add your proficiency bonus to that ability check.
Fear Monger
The mere presence of a Spellbreaker strikes fear into the hearts of arcanists. Starting at 11th level, whenever you successfully end a spell, curse, or magical effect with dispel magic, counterspell, lesser restoration, or greater restoration, you can force the caster or source to succeed a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or be frightened of you for 1 minute.
Antimagic Rift
Starting at 15th level, you’ve mastered the art of tearing small, persistent holes in the fabric of magic, and attaching them to unfortunate souls. As an action, you create a 5-foot diameter sphere of antimagic, centered on a point you choose within 60 feet, as per the antimagic field spell. If the point you choose is on a creature, the sphere moves with the creature.
This antimagic field lasts for 1 minute, or until you choose to end it on your turn (no action required.) Once you use this ability, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest or expend a spell slot of 4th level or greater.
