Base Class: Wizard
Hedge Wizardry is less of a School and more of an occupation. Its members choose to develop their arcane mastery by practical experience and often take in knowledge from unorthodox sources not found in arcane Libraries and Institutions.
They survive by practising their craft and other labours for favours, payment and knowledge. More often than not, they have few material possessions and prefer to take shelter in modest accommodation. Students of other Schools often mock them for their lifestyle choices, but an accomplished Hedge Wizard is a knows much lore and cannot be denied as a master of resourcefulness.
Student of The World
At 2nd level you gain proficiency in one tool of your choice and two of the following skills: History, Nature, Religion, Medicine, Survival, or Animal Handling.
You also gain the cantrip mending, and one of the following- Druidcraft, predesignation, or thaumaturgy.
Revisionist
At 2nd level you’ve become far more flexible of an arcane caster. During a short rest you may now replace a number of spells you had prepared that day equal to your proficiency modifier with a known Wizard spell in your spell book.
When you choose to use this feature, you gain the normal benefits of a short rest, except that you cannot expend hit dice to heal.
Encyclopedia-Based Spellbook
At 6th level you’ve seen and heard many interesting tales and natural phenomena. Because of this, your spellbook has become an encyclopaedic tome of rapidly scrawled notes and arcane theories. The innate magic of your recorded spells has consequently interweaved with this knowledge and can be called upon in an instant.
Whenever you make an intelligence based skill check that you are proficient in, you may expend an unspent 1st level spell slot to double your proficiency bonus for that check.
You must use this ability before rolling the dice.
Improvised Casting
A Hedge Wizard often must make do with what resources and tools they have at hand. At 10th level, whenever you cast a spell with a material component with a monetary cost, you expend half the gold needed to cast the spell or use a material component half as expensive. For example, when casting a 5th level Scrying spell, the Hedge Wizard can substitute a 1,000 Gold mirror, crystal ball or font with one worth 500 Gold.
Once per long rest you may also use your bonus action to replace one of your prepared spells with a spell in your spellbook that was not prepared that day.
Student of Many Schools
At 14th level, you’ve learned through observation and interaction with other non-Wizard casters how to tap into magical energies foreign to your arcane understanding.
Once per long rest, you may prepare one spell not on the Wizard’s spell list of 7th level or lower. This spell does not count against the total number of spells you can prepare and cannot be affected by your Revisionist and Improvised Casting abilities. This spell does not count as a Wizard spell and you must use the spell casting ability of the class who’s list you have taken this spell from.
