School of Tyromancy

“I was once captured by bandits, embarrassingly enough. When the time came to feed me, they gave me a loaf of bread and some cheese. A short while later, most of the camp had melted from acid and the bandits died from poison.”

           - Cremor Caseus, Tyromancer

In ancient times, mages called tyromancers found a way to harness the power of the weave by giving it physical form. Strangely enough, this form resulted in what we today call cheese. At some point in time, cheese became a source of nourishment rather than magic and the art of tyromancy became nearly extinct. Today, only a few people, even among scholars and mages know of the power that is contained within cheese. But despite its decline, tyromancy is still being kept alive by a few dedicated wizards who has realized the untapped power of tyromancy.

Tyromancers do not favor a particular school of magic above another, but the power of cheese works better on certain spells. Tyromancy utilizes the properties within cheese, enhancing spells that deals with caustic and toxic effects. Some tyromancers can even draw power from the entropic process of fermentation to command anti-life effects.

By using cheese as spell components, the magical make-up of some spells change, producing strange effects. For example, using brie to fuel fire spells turn the flame white and casting divination magic releases a strong, acidic odor in the air. Some effects become more drastic, completely changing the spell to its core.

Dairy Lore

2nd-level Tyromancy Feature

In order to be a capable tyromancer, one must first learn how to make, age, and cultivate cheese to be fit for the arcane arts. Normally, this process is a long process. But a tyromancer can do that through magical means, even while travelling.

Upon reaching level 2 and picking this subclass you gain proficiency in Cook’s Utensils or Alchemist’s Supplies.

Essential Cheeses

2nd-level Tyromancy Feature

Cheese is a vital ingredient in the arcane process of tyromancers. Without cheese, they are unable to unlock the true power of their school.

  • You can use cheese as reagents in your spellcasting, replacing the standard material components required to cast a spell. The more expensive a spell is to cast, the finer the cheese must be. If the material components of a spell display a monetary value, the cheese used to cast the spell must be of equal value.
  • When you cast a Wizard spell dealing damage while using cheese as material components you can transmute the damage type of the spell to deal either Acid, Necrotic or Poison damage instead.
  • As a Bonus Action, you can consume some cheese to restore 2d6 + your wizard level’s worth of hit points. Once you have used this benefit, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.

Arcane Affinage

6th-level Tyromancy Feature

Starting at 6 level, you can spend 8 hours cultivating an arcane-aged piece of cheese that contains beneficial magic. You can benefit from the cheese yourself or give it to another creature. A creature gains a benefit of your choice as long as the cheese is in the creature’s possession. When you create the cheese, choose one of the following types:

  • Devil’s Emmental: Truesight out to a range of 30 feet.
  • Hero’s Mozarella: Advantage on Saving Throws against Frightened, Charmed, Paralyzed, or Petrified (your choice whenever you choose this cheese).
  • Dwarven Gouda: Proficiency in Constitution Saving Throws
  • Elven Brie: Proficiency in Dexterity Saving Throws.
  • Dragon’s Cheddar: Resistance to acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison damage (your choice whenever you choose this cheese).

If the arcane cheese is on your person, you can change cheese type whenever you take a short rest.

If you create a new arcane cheese, the previous one melts and ceases to function.

Curdled Spells

10th-level Tyromancy Feature

Beginning at 10th level, your cheeses gain more potency letting you add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of any Wizard spell you cast that deals either Acid, Necrotic or Poison damage.

Caseiculture

14th-level Tyromancy Feature

You have mastered the intricate art of tyromancy. You are now able to cultivate two arcane cheeses during a long rest and use both of them at the same time. You or a creature you hand the arcane cheeses can benefit from both at the same time or you can divide them up to two different creatures, each gaining a benefit each. You can choose different benefits for each cheese or the same for both.

Additionally, you can choose to gain resistance against one of the following damage types: Acid, Necrotic or Poison
