Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monastic Tradition

Monks of the Way of the Street are self-taught warriors, surviving on their own and learning martial arts combat, whether armed or unarmed, out of necessity. They learn any techniques they can to ensure their survival. This path emphasizes ways to restrain targets, make targets more vulnerable, and protect themselves from harm.

The techniques listed below which require a saving throw use the Ki formula: DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

Rough Them Up

At 3rd level, you gain proficiency in Athletics, or Expertise if you are already proficient. While you have a target grappled, you may move your whole move speed with your grappled target (instead of half).  You may also choose to apply one of the following effects:

  • Held: the target has disadvantage on attacks against you, but not anyone else.
  • Locked: your allies have advantage on attacks against the target, but your target has advantage to escape your grapple.

Unshakable Grip

At 6th level, you've mastered Grappling. You can now grapple a creature up to 2 sizes larger than you. Also, you may spend 1 Ki point as you start any grapple. If you do so, your grapple becomes "Unshakable" as your Ki and theirs become entwined. Anytime your grappled target attempts to cast a spell, use an ability, or use a magic item which would move them magically (Misty Step, Teleport, Blink, Dimension Door, etc.) you may use your Reaction to choose one of the following effects:

  • Anchored: they must make a Charisma saving throw or that spell/ability is Countered.
  • Hitched: you can sense their destination, and can choose (or not) to automatically travel with them.

Toughen Up

At 11th level, you know how to mitigate punishment. As a bonus action, you can focus your Ki energy and choose one of the following benefits until the start of your next turn:

  • Steel Jaw: gain Resistance to either piercing, slashing or bludgeoning damage.
  • One with Nature: gain Resistance to acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage.

Submission

At 17th level, when you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you can spend 3 Ki points to obtain a submission hold. The creature must make a Constitution saving throw. If it fails, it is reduced to 0 hit points, and you have the option of leaving them stable. If it succeeds the saving throw, it takes 10d10 + your Wisdom modifier bludgeoning damage.
