Base Class: Fighter
The archetypal Dragon Rider combines the martial mastery common to all fighters with innate magics gained from a soul bond with a dragon. Dragon Riders use magical techniques similar to those practiced by wizards. They focus their study on two of the eight schools of magic: abjuration and evocation. Abjuration spells grant a Dragon Rider additional protection in battle, and evocation spells deal damage to many foes at once, extending the fighter's reach in combat. They learn a relatively small number of spells relying solely on memory. All Dragon Riders hope to one day ride their dragon through the sky and into battle.
Soul Bound Dragon
When you have grown strong enough as a warrior you are presented before a series of Dragon Eggs. The one that is meant for you will hatch upon you touching it. Beginning at 3rd level, you form a soul bond with a dragon that aids you in battle. In combat, the Dragon shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the Dragon can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge. Your level determines the size of the dragon.
3rd: Wyrmling (Medium, not Mountable)
7th: Wyrmling (Large, Mountable)
15th: Young (Huge)
Work with your DM about the type of Dragon you are soul bonded with.
Additionally at 3rd level, you can speak, read, and write Draconic. Whenever you make a Charisma check when interacting with dragons, your proficiency bonus is doubled if it applies to the check.
If the Soul Bonded Dragon dies it will require 1d8 days for the Dragon to be resurrected (2d8 for Wyrmling and 3d8 for Young) as well as your hitpoint maximum will be reduced by 50% for the duration of these days.
