Base Class: Monk
Monks of the Way of the Sohei tradition dedicate themselves to the realization of their essence nature and to the awakening of their potential. Way of the Sohei Monks hone their body-minds into a finely tuned instrument capable of great physical feats and astral phenomenon, but the ultimate purpose of this training is to become the right type of vessel capable of the union of self and the Supreme Original.
Sohei Disciple
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, your dedication to the Way of the Sohei leads you to master a unique set of equipment:
Weapons of the Sohei: Way of the Sohei Monks gain proficiency with the Naginata Glaive, Scimitar, and Longbow. These weapons are considered monk weapons to you.
Armor of the Sohei: Way of the Sohei Monks specialize in a unique set of armor that can only be acquired at Sohei Temples and can only be worn by Monks of this Monastic Tradition. The Armor of the Sohei includes:
- Sohei Dō-maru: This armor is a flexible form-fitting plated body wrap. When wearing the Sohei Dō-maru your AC equals 13 + your Dexterity modifier. This special armor does not conflict with the Unarmored Movement class feature.
- Sohei Kasa: Way of the Sohei Monks wear a circular rattan weaved hat that features a razor sharp metal rim. You may equip this item in your offhand as a shield granting a +1 AC bonus. When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can attack with your shield dealing slashing damage equal to your martial arts die as a bonus action. This special shield does not conflict with the Martial Arts and Unarmored Movement class features.
- Traditional Scarf This cloth is part of the traditional Sohei attire. You can use this long scarf to make a mask by wrapping it around your head. While the scarf is fashioned in this way you can only be discovered by way of Intelligence (Investigation) contested against your Charisma (Deception). When used in combination with your Sohei Kasa you are generalized as a wandering monk.
- Dual Scimitar Fighting: When wielding a scimitar in each hand, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second attack.
Radiant Ordination
At 3rd level you are ordained as Disciple of the Sohei Monastic Tradition. Through your insightful spiritual practice you have learned how to tap into an all pervasive spiritual energy to manifest certain cantrips.
Cantrips: You learn three cantrips: Gust and two other cantrips of your choice from the Cleric spell list. You learn another Cleric cantrip of your choice at 10th level.
Mikkyō (Esoteric Practice)
At 6th level you may use your spiritual objects to purify yourself of any flinching or hesitation resulting in every movement becoming deliberate and graceful. Through hours of prayer and meditation with your spiritual objects you have become spiritual attuned to them granting these features:
-
Monk Beads: While not in combat you may use your Monk Beads for mantra practice and restore ki points equal to your Wisdom Modifier. You must then finish a long rest to use this benefit again.
-
Prayer Khata: Your Traditional Sohei Scarf becomes a Prayer Khata. You may use this spritual object to cast Shield of Faith. The spell is bound to the Prayer Khata and the effect of the spell is granted to whoever is wearing it. Once you use your Prayer Khata, you can't do so again until you spend part of your long rest in spiritual practice.
-
Mikoshi (Portable Shrine): When you pray and meditate on a long rest you imbue this object with spiritual energy. You can set up your Mikoshi as an Action to empower yourself and demoralize your enemies. While within 60-ft of your Mikoshi, when you make an attack roll or saving throw, you can use your reaction to cause the roll to have advantage. Alternatively, when an enemy makes an attack roll against you or a saving throw contesting your action, you can use your reaction to cause the roll to have disadvantage as they are unsettled by the single pointedness of your Unshakable Faith. While within the radius of your Mikoshi you cannot be charmed or frightened. The shrine can be carried with one hand and has an AC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + wisdom modifier as well as having health equal to 5 times your monk level
Methodical Rapidity
At 11th level, after you take the Attack action on your turn, you can spend 1 ki point to overwhelm the enemy with two more attacks as a bonus action. The damage of these strikes equals your Martial Arts die. If either one of these attacks hit the next Attack made against them has advantage but does not work on other attacks that already used Methodical Rapidity.
