Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

Barbarians who walk the Path of the Revenant often have found themself dealt a losing hand in life. Perhaps in the pursuit of some larger goal they met a grisly fate; perhaps their high tolerance to extremes led them to an early grave in a collapsed mine or deep in the wilderness where none can find them. Whatever the case, to come back from the edge of death itself, whether by the guiding hand of some greater power or through sheer determination is no easy feat. That wisdom of what lies at the edge of the great beyond brings a clarity in the pitch of battle that affords you opportunities others cannot take, in return for risking a similar fate to that which granted you power.

Stalwart Soul

You manifest a strong grit and determination when you rage, turning your pain into a resource you can use against your enemies. While raging, when you take damage you gain a Grit die until the end of your next turn, which is a d4 for you. This becomes a d6 at 9th level and a d8 at 16th level. You can hold a number of Grit dice equal to your proficiency bonus.

You may use any of the following effects using this resource:

  • When you hit a creature with an attack roll, you may roll any of the Grit dice you currently have, dealing necrotic damage equal to the roll.
  • You may choose to gain a bonus to a Saving Throw equal to a roll of one Grit die.
  • When you are hit by an attack, you may use your reaction to expend two Grit die and make a single attack against that creature - this attack is resolved before you take any damage.

Dark Mind

You may empower yourself by generating Grit. When you make an ability check, you may take necrotic damage equal to one roll of your Grit die to add that amount to the check. If you are not proficient in this skill, you take necrotic damage equal to two rolls of your Grit die instead, using the higher roll as your bonus.

Living Dead

You have grown acclimated to the pressures of death. You have resistance to necrotic damage.

In addition, when you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Constitution saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, and only half damage if you fail. Succeeding in this way grants you one Grit die.

Salt the Earth

You draw forth your Grit in a violent burst of power. When you use a bonus action to Rage, you may take damage equal to one roll of your Grit die. You gain a number of Grit dice equal to half your proficiency bonus rounded down. Each creature of your choice within 30 feet of you must succeed on a Constitution saving throw, taking necrotic damage equal to twice your maximum Grit dice or half as much on a success. The Save DC is equal to 8 + Proficiency Bonus + your Constitution modifier.
