Base Class: Wizard
An incantatrix, also known as an incantatar for males or the gender-neutral (but less accurate) metamage, was a skilled practitioner of metamagic in Faerûn. These individuals studied and shaped spells in their raw effects. They could modify the spells of allies, magic items, and even active spells cast by another incantatrix. Throughout their extensive training, incantatrixes assumed a number of ranked titles, including 'dweomaedar', 'memurge', 'weirworker', and 'spellbinder'.
Historically, Incantatrixes began their studies in metamagic by learning to read magic, identify spells as they were being cast, and enhance spells cast by their allies. Over time they gained the ability to apply their metamagic enhancements to spells that were already in effect, and even magical items that possessed an active spell trigger. Incantatrixes were especially potent at banishing outsiders. These powers could also be used to dispel any monsters that were summoned through the use of spells.
The most experienced incantatrixes who mastered metamagic could wield their powers with great efficiency. They did not have to expend the same mental resources as their less experienced counterparts.
Dweomaedar: Read Magic
The Incantatrix is a specialization of the Abjuration school with a focus on affecting spellcasting with their magic. As part of their initial training, an Incantatrix learns to decode different magical ciphers and identify modifications in the spellcasting of other traditions. An Incantatrix cannot cast spells from a spellbook they did not write, but copying a spell from another's spellbook takes half the time required by other Wizards (1 hour per spell level, still 50 gp per spell level). They are treated as having Expertise when they make an Arcana (INT) check to identify a spell being cast as well as when copying spells from scrolls, doubling their proficiency bonus.
You take an oath to protect the integrity of the magical world against outside intrusion. You cannot cast any spell from the Conjuration school (or use a magic item) to summon a creature from another plane of existence. Prohibited spells include Conjure Elemental, Conjure Minor Elementals, Find Familiar, Flock of Familiars, Galder's Speedy Courier, Infernal Calling, Summon Aberration, Summon Construct, Summon Draconic Spirit, Summon Elemental, Summon Fey, Summon Fiend, Summon Greater Demon, Summon Lesser Demons, or Summon Shadowspawn. You cannot use the summoning aspect of Gate and cannot use Wish to summon a creature. You can use spells like Faithful Hound, Dust Devil, Unseen Servant, and Mordenkainen's Sword, which summon a force rather than a creature. Incantatrixes are typically distrustful of summoners, and are themselves considered distasteful to most outsiders for the purpose of Banishment.
As an abjuration specialist, you add Beacon of Hope (lvl 3). Death Ward (lvl 4), Dispel Evil and Good (lvl 5), Protection from Poison (lvl 2), Resistance (Cantrip), and Shield of Faith (lvl 1) to your class spell list. These are Wizard spells for you, but other Wizards cannot copy them from your spellbook.
Dweomaedar: Metamage
You learn to use higher level spell slots to apply Metamagic effects to spells you cast.
You learn one Metamagic option when you achieve 2nd level. You acquire an additional Metamagic options at 6th, 10th, and 14th level. You can exchange one Metamagic effect you know for another whenever you gain a Wizard level.
To apply a Metamagic effect to a spell, you must cast the spell using a spell slot of a higher level. You can only apply a single Metamagic effect to any given spell. The following list indicates the upcast spell slot requirement.
- Careful Spell: +1 level
- Distant Spell: +1 level
- Empowered Spell: +1 level, and you must opt to empower the spell before casting it.
- Extended Spell: +1 level
- Heightened Spell: +2 levels
- Quickened Spell: +2 levels
- Subtle Spell: +1 level
- Twinned Spell: +2 levels
- Seeking Spell: +1 level, and you must opt to make the spell seeking before casting it.
- Transmuted Spell: +1 level
You can apply Metamagic effects to your cast spells a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per short rest. You can upcast a cantrip to apply a Metamagic effect to it.
Careful Spell
When you cast a spell that forces other creatures to make a saving throw, you can protect some of those creatures from the spell. Choose a number of those creatures up to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of one creature). A chosen creature is unaffected by the spell.
Distant Spell
When you cast a spell that has a range of 5 feet or greater, you can double the range of the spell. When you cast a spell that has a range of touch, you make the range of the spell 30 feet.
Empowered Spell
When you roll damage for a spell, you reroll a number of the damage dice up to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of one). You must use the new rolls. You can use Empowered Spell even if you have already used a different Metamagic option during the casting of the spell.
Extend Spell
When you cast a spell that has a duration of 1 minute or longer, you can double its duration, to a maximum duration of 24 hours.
Heighten Spell
When you cast a spell that forces a creature to make a saving throw to resist its effects, you can give one target of the spell disadvantage on its first saving throw made against the spell.
Quicken Spell
When you cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 action, you can change the casting time to 1 bonus action for this casting. You can only cast one spell with a level per turn. If you cast another spell, the first or second spell must be a cantrip. The DM may apply this rule to your reaction if you use it on your turn.
Seeking Spell
If you make an attack roll for a spell and miss, you can reroll the d20, and you must use the new roll. You can use Seeking Spell even if you have already used a different Metamagic option during the casting of the spell.
Subtle Spell
When you cast a spell with Verbal, Somatic, or non-cost Material components, you can cast it without components. You must keep your eyes in the direction of the spell's target. You still must provide any material components with a gp cost.
Transmuted Spell
When you cast a spell that deals a type of damage from the following list, you can change that damage type to one of the other listed types: acid, cold, fire, lightning, poison, thunder.
Twinned Spell
When you cast a spell that targets only one creature and doesn’t have a range of self, you can target a second creature in range with the same spell. To be eligible, a spell must be incapable of targeting more than one creature at the spell’s current level. For example, magic missile and scorching ray aren’t eligible.
Memurge: Cooperative Metamagic
At 6th level, you can apply Metamagic effects that you know to the spells produced by your allies. You cannot grant the ally the Quicken Spell or the Subtle Spell effects.
To aid an allied spellcaster, you must first use your reaction to identify the spell being cast, and that spell must have a casting time of one action or greater. If the ally tells you the name of the spell, you have advantage on this check. You cannot identify a spell with no spellcasting components. Upon successfully identifying the spell, as part of that reaction, you can expend a spell slot one level lower than the allied spellcaster to apply a +1 level Metamagic effect, or a spell slot of the same level to apply a +2 level Metamagic effect.
The spellcasting ally intuitively understands what you have done to the spell. The ally controls all decisions about the spell and its Metamagic effect. You can apply a Metamagic effect to a spell with a Metamagic effect already, such as one cast by a Sorcerer. However, you cannot apply more than one Metamagic effect to a spell, even if the spell takes more than one action to cast.
You can use this class feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
Spellbinder: Persistent Spell Metamagic
You can apply a Metamagic effect to a persistent spell effect that is already in place. For example, she could use Extend Spell to extend the duration of a wall of force or Empower Spell to increase the damage dealt by a cloudkill. To use this ability, the incantatrix must be adjacent to or within the spell effect and expend a spell slot level two below the level of the spell (or greater) for +1 level effects at at the level of the spell for +2 level effects. You cannot apply Quickened Spell or Subtle Spell to persistent spell effects. The Metamagic effects of Distant Spell, Twinned Spell, and Seeking Spell typically make no sense with regards to Persistent Spell Metamagic, although exceptions do exist (storm sphere can be made Seeking and Distant after it is cast).
An incantatrix can use this ability a number of times per day equal to her proficiency modifier.
Also, when you use a wand to cast an abjuration spell that requires you to make an ability check as a part of casting that spell, you add your proficiency bonus to that ability check.
Weirworker: Metamagic Spell Trigger
You can apply a Metamagic effect to the effect of a spell trigger item (generally a wand).
Using Metamagic Spell Trigger expends a number of additional charges from the item equal to the number of effective spell levels the Metamagic effect would add to a spell. The Still Spell effect confers no benefit when applied to a spell trigger item. There is no limitation to the number of times the Incantatrix can use this ability, other than the number of charges contained in the magic item.
An incantatrix cannot use this ability when using a spell trigger item that does not have charges, such as a strand of prayer beads.
