Base Class: Fighter
The clash of steel on the battlefield brings a young elf noble a thrill, and he stabs past his orc foe’s armor as a waraxe lands on his steel helm and reflects cleanly off, barely just slicing the plumage on the very top. Fragments of red fin fall around him as he drives his longsword into his foe’s chest, ending the engagement. With a cry to his gods, the Hoplite declares victory.
Stygian
At 3rd level, your heavy armor will only slow you down, and a warrior of the gods needs no such crutches, for the River Styx itself flows through your veins. You may wear only medium, light, or no armor. If your Dexterity score equals 16, you may gain a bonus of +3 to your AC, replacing the +2 restriction.
Form Up
Every good Hoplite knows proper phalanx formation. Beginning when you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you may form a phalanx with any other armored ally.
For every ally wearing light, medium, or heavy armor with within 5 feet of you, you gain a +1 bonus to your AC, for up to +8 AC. Allies who are prone do not count toward this bonus.
Marathon
Like the fateful messenger at the eponymous battle, a Hoplite may have to run all 26.2 miles from start to finish. Starting at 7th level, you may permanently add 10 feet to your speed.
In addition, you may use a bonus action to dash.
Hero of the City-State
At 10th level, you have learned to use your shield as a weapon.
When you use the Attack action on your turn, you may use a bonus action to attack with your shield as well. Your shield deals 1d6 plus your Strength modifier of bludgeoning damage, and forces the target to make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target is knocked prone, and has their speed reduced by 10 feet. On a successful save, the target suffers no effects.
Spear of Destiny
You have been trained by the City-State to wield the dory with proficiency. Starting at 15th level, weapon attacks made with spears increase in damage from a 1d6 to a 1d8 damage die (including all ranged attacks and one-handed attacks). Your ranged attacks with a spear increase from 20/60 feet to 30/120 feet.
You may now use a pike in melee combat with one hand instead of two, and throw the pike for a ranged attack up to 20/60 feet.
Achilles Heal
At 18th level, you now have learned to sleep on your feet and in the most inopportune of locales. When using your hit die on a short rest, double the amount healed for each dice you roll.
