Base Class: Monk
Monks that follow the Way of the Granite Guardian count themselves lucky to be blessed by one of the creatures that they consider holy. Gorgons, gargoyles, and the like are trusted as protectors within their temples, and to be reborn in their likeness is an honor above all else.
Granite's Blessing
When you take this subclass at 3rd level, your skin becomes like stone, smooth and strong. When you would take damage, you can expend a ki point and your reaction to harden your body, petrifying yourself as well as any objects on your person until the start of your next turn. While you are petrified, you do not become incapacitated, and do not automatically fail Strength and Dexterity saving throws. You also retain the ability to move, speak, and remain aware of your surroundings while petrified.
In addition, you learn to read, write, and speak Terran and Primordial.
Stone Guardian
Also at 3rd level, your statue-like body allows you to take blows meant for others. As a bonus action, you can call upon the Gorgon’s power, forcing foes to face yourself instead of your allies. Until the start of your next turn, whenever a creature other than yourself within 30 feet would be hit by an attack, you can force the attacker to make a Wisdom saving throw (no action required). On a failed save, the attacker is forced to attack you instead, or otherwise lose the attack.
Stony Faced
At 6th level, your blessing further settles within yourself, protecting mind and body alike. Creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks made against you, and you have advantage on saving throws against mind-reading and mind-altering effects.
As an unintended side effect, you also have advantage on Charisma (Deception) checks and saving throws against effects that would force you to laugh.
Repulsive Visage
At 11th level, the fools who would strike those under your protection shall be met with your rebuke. Whenever a creature is hit by an attack while under the protection of your Stone Guardian feature, the attacker takes psychic damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die, as your grim visage looms over the transgressor.
In addition, you can use your Deflect Missiles feature while you are petrified without expending your reaction. When you do so, you can’t use the Deflect Missiles feature again until the start of your next turn.
Gaze of the Gorgon
At 17th level, you learn to lift just a sliver of the stony veil between your eyes and the rest of the world, bestowing the Gorgon’s blessing upon another. As an action, you can cast the flesh to stone spell. Wisdom is your spellcasting modifier for this spell. When cast in this way, the spell does not require concentration. After this spell ends, the target becomes immune to its effects for 24 hours.
A creature can willingly fail this spell’s saving throw, and you can cast this spell on yourself using a mirror or other reflective surface.
Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.

Posted Jul 4, 2023Come to think of it, level 6 does tend to be the sort of filler feature for monks. Huh. As for the 17th level ability, I forgot that you could use it on yourself. I was thinking that the monk got the ability to turn their enemies to stone, which might be on par with some of the better capstones. Regardless of that, I think it could benefit from being able to use it multiple times. If not recharged with ki, then maybe once per short rest instead or multiple times per long rest? Especially since it requires several con saves to work on an enemy, it's very likely that the first use isn't going to work if you use it aggressively. Either way, great flavor!

Posted Jul 4, 2023A lot of Monk 6th-level abilities tend to be niche. To be fair, this one was kinda just for the pun.
17th level ability is at minimum permanent resistance to almost all damage if you use it on yourself, so I'm not sure buffing it further is necessary...

Posted Jul 3, 2023Very nice! I love the stone and medusa feeling of this subclass! There is a small typo for Granite's Blessing on the character sheet when using it, and I feel like the level 17 ability is too weak. Maybe if you got one use for free and could spend 2 or 3 ki points to cast it again? Also, the level 6 ability seems to have too niche of a usage. Maybe it could allow you to headbutt enemies with your extra durable skull or gives your fist a stone-powered boost? Regardless, I love the flavor! I'll be using it in a campaign I'm running. Keep up the incredible work!
