Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monks of the Way of Retribution are single minded in their pursuit of vengeance. They train and hone their bodies to one day take their revenge on whatever has wronged them in the past. Most of these monks train with those of other traditions, keeping their true intentions secret until they are strong enough to seek their quarry.

Mark of Vengeance

Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you gain the ability to place a magical brand on someone, marking them for death. When you hit a creature with an unarmed attack, you can spend 2 ki points to sear an arcane brand into that creature (no action required). You always know the direction to the branded creature as long as it’s on the same plane as you. The mark remains indefinitely and only ends early if the target dies, you die, you are incapacitated or you mark another creature. Until the mark ends, you gain the following benefits:

  • You gain a bonus to damage rolls against the marked target. The bonus equals your proficiency bonus.
  • Any attack roll you make against the marked target is a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20.
  • You have advantage on any Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma saving throw against spells or magical effects that originate from the marked creature.

Mark Augments

At 6th level, you gain the ability to channel your ki when you mark a creature making your strikes hit harder or to chill your opponent to the bone. Only one augmentation to the mark can be active at a time.

Mark of Fear

You can spend 2 ki points to have those marked for death by you know it and it chills them to the bone. When you mark a target using your Mark of Vengeance, they must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of you as long as they remain marked. The target can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending this effect. However, if they are still marked at the start of their next turn, they must make the save again reigniting their fear and potentially becoming frightened again.

Mark of the Decisive Strike

Your blows become infused with the spirit of vengeance. When you mark a creature, you can spend 2 ki points and choose to infuse the mark with the spirit of vengeance. When you make an unarmed strike against that marked creature the damage dice are doubled. For example, if your unarmed strike deals 1d4 damage it instead does 2d4 (or 2d6, 2d8 and 2d10 respectively as your level progresses).

This augmentation taxes your own spirit and once the mark ends your gain one level of exhaustion.

Mark of the Spellbreaker

You can spend 2 ki points to have those marked have extreme difficulty when casting spells. When you mark a target using your Mark of Vengeance, the creature has disadvantage on any spell attacks or concentration checks made to maintain spells as long as they remain marked

No Escape

At 17th level, you are relentless in your pursuit of your target. When targeting a creature under the effects of your Mark of Vengeance, if you miss with an attack roll using an unarmed strike on your turn, you can reroll it. You can use this feature only once on each of your turns.
