Base Class: Bard
Bards of the College of the Soulbound Lich have discovered a secret way to achieve lichdom through the power of their music. They bind their soul to a specific piece of music, known as their Soulbound Melody, which serves as a phylactery. These bards draw upon the dark energies of undeath and the magical essence of their music, gradually transforming into powerful and immortal beings.
Level 3: Soulbound Melody
As a bonus action, you can play or sing your Soulbound Melody to gain the following benefits for 1 minute:
- You gain temporary hit points equal to your bard level + your Charisma modifier.
- Your bardic inspiration die increases by one step (d6 to d8, d8 to d10, etc.).
- You have advantage on Charisma (Performance) checks when playing or singing your Soulbound Melody.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Level 3: Melodic Reaping
Whenever you deal damage with a bard spell, you can expend one use of your Bardic Inspiration to deal additional necrotic damage. The additional damage equals the number you roll on your Bardic Inspiration die.
Additionally, you learn one necromancy spell from any class's spell list. This spell must be of a level you can cast, and it counts as a bard spell for you but doesn't count against the number of bard spells you know.
Level 6: Lich's Resilience
You gain the following benefits:
- You no longer need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease and being poisoned.
- You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Level 14: Lichdom Ascension
You gain the following benefits:
- Your creature type changes to undead. You retain your current hit points and hit dice, but you no longer age.
- You have immunity to poison damage and the poisoned condition.
- You gain resistance to necrotic damage.
- You can cast the finger of death spell once per long rest without expending a spell slot. Your spellcasting ability for this spell is Charisma.
Additionally, you learn the secret ritual to create a Soulbound Phylactery. This ritual takes 8 hours and requires rare materials worth 5,000 gold pieces, which are consumed by the ritual. Once completed, your Soulbound Melody becomes your phylactery. As long as your Soulbound Melody is preserved and you can play or recall it, you cannot be permanently destroyed. If you are reduced to 0 hit points and not stabilized or healed within 1d10 days, your body crumbles to dust, but you re-form within 1d10 days at a location of your choice within 1 mile of where your body was destroyed, with all your hit points restored.
However, if the knowledge of your Soulbound Melody is ever lost or forgotten, you become vulnerable to permanent destruction, and your soul is severed from your phylactery. To protect your Soulbound Melody, you might choose to create multiple copies, store it in magical devices, or teach it to trusted allies.
Remember that becoming a lich is a dark and dangerous path, and it might bring unforeseen consequences for your character and the game world. It is crucial to discuss this with your Dungeon Master and fellow players to ensure that it fits the campaign's tone and storyline.
