Base Class: Rogue
By tapping into shadow magic, you become a master crafter of illusions. Your abilities to invoke shadowy duplicates of yourself allow you to overtake other thieves and criminals by being always one step ahead. Often employed for their superior forgery skills, dead ringer rogues are also incredibly elusive in combat and hard to pin down.
As a dead ringer rogue, you may have been touched by the negative energy of the Shadowfell as a child, or have discovered your dark magic prowess in a near-death experience.
Shadow Self
3rd-level Dead Ringer feature
As a bonus action, you create a perfect illusion of yourself that lasts until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell). The illusion appears in an unoccupied space that you can see within 30 feet of you. As a free action on each subsequent turn, you can move the illusion up to 30 feet to a space you can see, but it must remain within 120 feet of you, otherwise it dissipates.
If the Shadow Self is targeted by an attack or is within an area of effect that would deal damage to it, it dissipates. A creature can use its action to make an Intelligence (Investigation) check to discern the illusory nature of your Shadow Self against a DC equal to your 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Charisma modifier.
Your Shadow Self counts as an ally for the purpose of your Sneak Attack. This effect doesn't apply to creatures that discern its illusory nature or can see through illusions.
Counterfeit Artist
3rd-level Dead Ringer feature
You can cast the minor illusion cantrip and Charisma is your spellcasting ability for it. You also gain proficiency with the forgery kit. When you use it, you can create subtle permanent illusions to change details of tiny objects, giving you advantage on any ability check you make with the forgery kit.
Uncanny Decoy
9th-level Dead Ringer feature
When you use Uncanny Dodge while your Shadow Self is active, you can instead take no damage and instantly teleport in your Shadow Self's place, dissipating it.
You can use the feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Maven of Mirages
13th-level Dead Ringer feature
You can cast the silent image and disguise self spells at will, without expending a spell slot or requiring components, and Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells. When you cast disguise self, you can also target your Shadow Self instead of yourself.
Tangible Shadows
17th-level Dead Ringer feature
You master the art of shadows, blurring the line between reality and illusion. Your Shadow Self improves in the following ways:
- While your Shadow Self is active, at the start of each of your turns before resolving any other effect, you can swap places with your Shadow Self.
- The Shadow Self counts as an ally for the purposes of your Sneak Attack even if the enemy has discerned its nature or can see through illusions.
- When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your Shadow Self moves at least 5 feet away from it, you can use your reaction to make an attack against that creature.
