Base Class: Bard
Bards of the College of Fools are jesters, clowns, and comedic performers. They use lowbrow stories, daring acrobatics, and cutting jokes to entertain audiences, ranging from the crowds in a rundown dockside pub to the nobles of a king’s royal court. Where other bards seek forgotten lore or tales of epic bravery, College of Fools bards ferret out embarrassing and hilarious stories of all kinds. Whether telling the tale of a brawny stable hand’s affair with an aged duchess or a mocking satire of a paladin of Helm’s cloying innocence, a fool never lets taste, social decorum, or shame get in the way of a good laugh.
Heckler's Wit
3rd-Level College of Fools feature
When you join the College of Fools at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in Performance. Additionally, you learn the vicious mockery cantrip if you don't already know it.
Whenever you cast an Enchantment spell that deals damage, you can add your Charisma modifier to the damage.
Butt of the Joke
3rd-Level College of Fools feature
Also at 3rd level, you can magically enhance the failure of your enemies by turning it into one big joke. Whenever a creature within 30 feet of you fails a saving throw caused by you or one of your allies, you can use your reaction to expend and roll a bardic inspiration die. They suffer both psychic damage and an additional effect based on the number you roll (Ex. If you roll a 1, they take 1 damage and suffer the first effect on the table):
Result |
Butt of the Joke Effect |
1-2 |
The creature's eyes tear up at the sounds of your jokes. It is blinded until the end of your next turn. |
3-4 |
The creature's feelings are hurt by your teasing. It is frightened of you until the end of your next turn. |
5-6 |
The creature halts in place as you laugh at it's failure. It's movement speed becomes 0 until the end of your next turn. |
7-8 |
The creature doubles over in laughter, falling prone and becoming incapacitated until the end of your next turn. |
9-10 |
The creature lets down it's guard as it loses it's will to continue fighting while you make fun of it. All attacks against the creature have advantage until the end of your next turn. |
11-12 |
The creature is shocked by the jokes you make at it's expense. It is stunned until the end of your next turn. |
Comedic Timing
6th-Level College of Fools feature
Starting at 6th level, whenever you would cast an Enchantment spell that has a casting time of 1 action, you can expend a use of Bardic Inspiration to cast it as a bonus action instead.
Clown King
14th-Level College of Fools feature
You put on a killer performance. Starting at 14th level, you've mastered the art of puns and slapstick humor, embracing the comedic aspects of the world, using your magical comedy to fundamentally alter the minds of those in your vicinity. As an action, you can enter a state of peak comedy and humor for 1 minute. While you are in this state, you gain the following benefits:
- You ignore immunity to the charmed condition, as you've learned to make even the most stoic laugh.
- Whenever you cast an Enchantment spell using a spell slot higher than the minimum required level, you can target an additional creature with it for each level higher than the minimum. If the spell can already target multiple creatures when cast at a higher level, each target of the spell instead takes psychic damage equal to 5 times the level of the spell cast. (Ex. If you cast Tasha's Hideous Laughter as a 3rd-level spell, you can target 2 additional creatures with it.)
- Whenever a creature that is affected by an Enchantment spell you have cast is reduced to 0 hit points, you regain an expended use of Bardic Inspiration.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
