Base Class: Monk

Hailing from one of the many Eastern Temples, the devout train to protect those weak and frail from danger and harm. They are blessed by the devas to help those in need and safeguard the holy saints. They are the guardians of virtue and the purifiers of sin. They are Asura.

Hidden from the eyes of many and known only to few, the ambitious seek ever more power to slake their eternal desires. They gain their power through immense passion and destruction. They are the tyrants of rage and the destroyers of balance. They are Asura.

The Order of Asura are as a group a varied lot, with many conflicting beliefs and ideas, but they all stand united at the core at how they work -through passion and immense belief. Asuras are never neutral, they pick a cause in what they believe in and fight to the death to achieve it.

In the Throes of Passion

At 3rd level, when you choose this Monastic Tradition, you can channel your worldly desires to intensify your physical abilities. As a bonus action, you can spend 3 ki points to enter passion. A nimbus of energy surrounds your flesh and invigorates you. You gain the following benefits while using this feature, as long as you are not wearing armor or using a shield:

  • You gain advantage on checks and saving throws in a number of ability scores of your choice (str, dex, con, etc.) equal to your proficiency.
  • When you make an unarmed strike or monk weapon attack, you gain a bonus to the damage roll equal to your proficiency bonus.
  • You reduce all damage by (Prof + an Ability Score Modifier of your choice (Min 1)) x (2 + the number of features from this subclass(minimum 1). You apply this reduction before resistances. You may change the chosen ability modifier each time you enter passion.
  • Whenever you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon attack, you regain 1 ki point.
  • Gain 5 ft of movement per monk level.

If you are able to cast spells, you can't cast them or concentrate on them while raging.

Your passion lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are knocked unconscious or if your turn ends and you haven't attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then.

Spirit of Fervor

Starting at 6th level, it is as if the spirits themselves possess you. Four arms formed from the essence of your self manifest on your back when you enter passion. Your passion feature now lasts 10 minutes instead of 1 and no longer ends early when you are not attacked or attacking a hostile creature. You can choose to cool your passion early as a free action. You gain the following:

  • When you make an attack, you may make an additional attack as part of the same attack. Extra attacks gained this way does not grant additional attacks.
  • During your attack action or a flurry of blows, you can add a number of attacks up to your proficiency. Each additional attack made this way costs 1 ki. Attacks made this way can provide extra attacks from the first bullet of this feature.
  • Add 1 extra damage die to all monk weapons and unarmed attacks equal to your martial arts die.
  • When you score a critical hit with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon attack, you may add damage equal to your monk level.
  • While in the throes of passion, you may add a bonus to attack rolls, saving throws, ac, and damage equal to the number of features from this subclass. (Min. 2)

In the Midst of Celebration

At 11th level, your passion has grown so much that you feel a higher power coursing through your flesh and bones. Your current ability scores and their maximums increase by 2. The feature In the Throes of Passion now lasts for 1 hour. 

  • As a bonus action, spend a number of ki points up to your proficiency. Roll an equivalent number of your martial arts die and regain health equal to the number + your monk level.
  • As part of or separate from the above bonus action, you may also remove conditions on you for 2 ki per condition. You may remove levels of exhaustion this way each level counting as a separate condition.
  • You may spend 3 ki to cast clairvoyance, counterspell, fly, gaseous form, or remove curse. You may now cast and concentrate on spells during your passion.
  • If you have spent at least 1 ki on your turn, you ignore resistances and treat immunities as resistance. This lasts until the start of your next turn.
  • While in passion, you are always under the effects of the dodge and disengage action.

Inflamed Desires

At 17th level, your desires swell and burst forth, becoming tangible gifting you immense power. Your current ability scores and maximums increase by an additional 4 on top of what you have already received.

Additionally, when you enter passion, you can spend 4 additional ki to assume the shape of an Asura, an enlarged six-armed destroyer, for the duration of the feature. While you are in the Asura form, in addition to the normal benefits you gain from your passion, you gain the following benefits:

  • You gain a +2 bonus to AC, and your walking speed is doubled.
  • You have resistance to all damage, and you are immune to all conditions. If you are afflicted by any conditions before you assume the Asura form, the effect is suspended for the duration of the Asura form.
  • When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can make two additional unarmed strikes or monk weapon attacks with the same Attack action.
  • Your size increases to large and your monk weapons and unarmed attacks have the number of their base damage dice doubled for the duration.
  • When a hostile creature enters or starts its turn within 30 ft of you, it must make a charisma save against your wisdom dc or be under the effects of "Defilement".

Defilement: When a creature is under this effect, reduce its resistances and immunities to all damage by 1 level. If a creature does not have resistance to a damage type before being affected it is now vulnerable. This stacks with the feature "In the Midst of Celebration". All defiled creatures cannot regain health until the end of their next turn.
