Sorcerer
Base Class: Sorcerer

As structured and cerebral as the art of spell mimicry can be, what causes someone to become a blue magic sorcerer is more ephemeral and is not always well-understood.  Lineage is certainly involved as most if not all practitioners of the azure arts have ancestors who wielded great arcane power.  Indeed, as rare as these special sorcerers are, there have even been cases of an ancestor as recent as a parent or grandparent also being a blue magic user.  Whatever the case, you find yourself counted among these small few who get their power not just from within themselves, but from those they face or see in combat - always seeking new powers to gain and add to their Book of the Blue.

Book of the Blue

At 1st level, you learn "Cyan Mimicry" and have a number of Mimicry Slots equal to your Blue Magic Sorcerer level (up to a maximum of 10).  You can use these slots to store a spell or ability targeted by Cyan Mimicry.  During a long rest you can permanently save the spell or ability in each Mimicry Slot if you have a high enough level spell slot to cast it (spells and abilities without recorded levels or not normally available to players have their level determined by the DM).  This is done by transcribing the spell into your "Book of the Blue" which exists in an extradimensional space only you can access.  Spells that are cast at higher than normal levels use their minimum spell level to determine whether they can be transcribed.  There is no maximum number of spells that can be saved in this way.

Also during a long rest, you can pick a number of spells saved this way up to your total number of Mimicry Slots to be castable at-will.  These spells act like any of your other sorcerer spells but do not count towards your total spells known.  If you choose to replace a spell selected previously, you still have the original spell that was replaced to be selected in future. You can also keep a spell/ability stored in a Mimicry Slot if you cannot save it permanently (due to not having a high enough level spell slot for example).  Stats of spells or abilities (damage, range, recharge, etc.) that you copy are based solely on the spell slot used for casting and the rules of the spell as written:

  • Copying a Fireball that was cast at 4th level gives you access to the 3rd level, 8d6 fire damage spell, which can be upcast if you have a higher slot, regardless of what happened when it was copied.
  • If an enemy has somehow doubled the range of a spell they cast, copying it does not give you a double-range version.
  • If a copied enemy ability has a cooldown or recharge that is part of the ability normally, so does the copied version.

Further, you can choose to use a stored spell or ability without spending a spell Slot, but emptying the Mimicry Slot.  In this case it functions as though you had used a spell scroll (though without any associated skill checks if applicable) and it cannot be up-cast if used in this way.  If a spell is being cast directly from a Mimicry Slot rather than using a traditional spell slot, you would use the lowest level slot that could be used to cast the spell.  Spells that have been saved and are no longer stored in Mimicry Slots may be up-cast as normal if the spell allows it.  Using a Mimicry Slot in this way expends the slot such that it cannot be used for other purposes.  Expended slots refresh during a long rest.

Cyan Mimicry

You can use Cyan Mimicry a number of times per long rest equal to your Blue Magic Sorcerer level (up to 10):

  • As a reaction to noticing someone or something within your normal movement range being targeted by a spell or ability from a hostile source, you can target that spell or ability and use Cyan Mimicry.
  • Using Cyan Mimicry halves any damage dealt to you by the targeted spell/ability and the duration of any effects on you.
  • If you are not an intended target and the spell has specific targets, you replace one target with yourself, moving up to your speed to a spot within 10 feet of the intended target but not any further from the caster OR a spot within 10 feet of the straight-line path the spell would take to its intended target.
  • If the spell affects an area, you move up to your speed to enter into the area of the effect.
  • In either case, movement taken this way comes out of your movement for your next turn (you can still use any remaining movement and/or dash on that turn as normal).
  • Moving in this way may provoke attacks of opportunity and if you become unable to move to intercept the targeted spell or ability as described, your Cyan Mimicry spell fails.
  • If you have an empty Mimicry Slot, you can fill it with the targeted spell or ability.
  • If you do not have an empty Mimicry Slot, you can empty one of your choice that is in use as a part of using Cyan Mimicry.
  • Uses of the Cyan Mimicry ability are not the same as Mimicry Slots, though you will likely have the same number in total per long rest (used or otherwise).
  • You recover all usages of Cyan Mimicry during a long rest, but can only use it to copy spells/abilities if you have an empty Mimicry Slot available.

Armor Proficiency

You gain proficiency with light and medium armor.  Your ability to cast spells while wearing this type of armor is not impeded.

Lapis Resilience

Starting at 6th level, you gain the ability to somewhat mimic the defense of others as well as the offense. When damage from one of your spells or abilities is resisted, you may copy the resistance to that damage type as a reaction:

  • Only one damage type may be copied per use of this feature.
  • This cannot copy damage immunities.
  • During a long rest, you may choose one type of damage resistance from among those you have copied before and gain that resistance.
  • You may only have at most one type of damage resistance obtained in this way at a time.
  • Resistance to non-magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing is considered one type of resistance for this purpose.

Cerulean Intuition

Beginning at 14th level, you may transcribe spells or abilities usable by a dead creature into your Book of the Blue by analyzing the creature's remains for 10 minutes and making an Arcana check.  Spells saved in this way function as though you had transcribed them from a Mimicry Slot during a long rest.  The DC for learning each spell/ability is equal to 12 + the effective spell level of the spell/ability as determined by the DM.

You make one roll and gain all spells/abilities for which you meet or exceed the DC.  If you would transcribe a spell that you do not have a spell slot of high enough level to cast you may instead store it in an empty Mimicry Slot.  If you do not have an empty Mimicry Slot, you may empty one (per ability you could not otherwise transcribe) as a free action.

Azure Legacy

At 18th level, all spells and abilities saved via transcription into your Book of the Blue or stored in Mimicry Slots are added to your known spells, as you merge your Book of the Blue with your mind directly.  These spells do not count towards your total spells known.  New spells and abilities gained through the use of your Blue Magic Sorcerer features are also added to your spells known without counting towards the total.  You do not need to wait for a long rest or to first transcribe them into your Book of the Blue.  Gaining abilities through Cerulean Intuition still requires the 10 minutes of analysis and the Arcana check, but no longer requires further steps after that point to gain access to the spells and abilities obtained.  Your Lapis Resilience ability remains unchanged and unaffected by this.
