Base Class: Ranger
Although hags have a reputation for villainy, they are powerful protectors of natural places and those who choose to live on the fringes of civilization. In this role, the Feywild natives sometimes forge an unusual alliance with rangers with similar interests. Cronseguard act as a hag coven’s agents in lands beyond their reach and, in exchange, the coven lends the ranger a portion of their power. You have made such a pledge.
Cronesguard Magic
Starting at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Cronesguard Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.
Cronesguard Spells
| Ranger Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 3rd | disguise self |
| 5th | blur |
| 9th | bestow curse |
| 13th | polymorph |
| 17th | animate objects |
Cronespeech
At 3rd level, you gain the ability to communicate telepathically with any creature with an Intelligence score of 6 or less within 60 feet, whether you share a language or not. You have advantage on Charisma checks and Animal Handling checks you make to convince or influence such a creature.
Additionally, you can cast the find familiar spell without expending a spell slot and it gains the following benefit:
As a bonus action, your familiar can impose disadvantage on one ability check or saving throw made by a creature within 5 feet of it until the start of your next turn. It can do this a number of time per day across any number of summons equal to your proficiency bonus.
Dark Blades
Also at 3rd level, when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can choose to deal extra necrotic damage to the target, which scales at different levels. 3rd level: +1d6
7th level: +1d8
11th level: +1d10
15th level: +1d12
If the target is cursed, frightened, or charmed, this bonus damage can be psychic damage instead, and you regain hit points equal to the extra damage dealt.
Blessing of Mother Night
By 7th level, your actions have pleased the crones that watch over you and given them a reason to protect you. You gain:
-
Resistance to necrotic damage
-
Advantage on saves vs frightened and charmed
-
Darkvision out to 60 feet, or +30 feet if you already have it
Additionally, you gain one Eldritch Invocation of your choice, at 15th level you get a second invocation. You use Wisdom instead of Charisma for any prerequisites or effects that rely on your casting stat. Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace the chosen invocation with a different one.
Witchmark Binding
At 11th level. When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can brand it with an invisible cursed glyph as a bonus action. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = your spell save DC) or be cursed for 1 minute.
While cursed:
-
It cannot take reactions.
-
It takes an additional 2d6 necrotic damage the first time it takes damage each turn.
-
It has disadvantage on saving throws against enchantment, illusion, and necromancy spells
The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect early on two successes. You can use this feature proficiency bonus times per short rest.
Heartstopping Horror
By the time you reach 15th level, you are as terrifying to a foe as any hag. When you would be hit by an attack, or targeted by the magic missile spell, you can use your reaction to bind your foe with dread magic. The attacker must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or:
-
The attack automatically misses
-
They are stunned until the end of your next turn
-
They take 2d10 psychic damage as their mind is seared by the crone’s gaze
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
